MD & DO Worried about GPA

$
0
0
Alright, how do I stand for the schools I'm planning on applying to, and where else would you suggest?

MCAT: took it May 18th, consistent 30-32 range on practice tests.

GPA: 3.30 cGPA, 3.20 sGPA (AACOMAS), 3.11 sGPA (AMCAS).
-Upward trend in grades, got a 2.9 my first semester, 3.55 my most recent 2 semesters
-very competitive university (University of Michigan - Ann Arbor), well above average GPA for my major.

Volunteering: 350+ hours in a hospital ER and nursing home.

Research: 320 hours paid research in a cancer research lab.

Shadowing: shadowed a well known DO Cardiologist in the area for ~30 hours, wrote a LOR for me.

Other ECs: a year on the Rifle Team and current paid position as a study group leader.

Applying to: MSU (DO and MD), LECOM-Erie, MUCOM, CCOM, Wayne State, U of M, Central Michigan, Oakland University, Rosalind Franklin University, Rush, University of Cincinnati.

Well, what do you all think?

So I just finished my first year as a pre-med student. The courses that i took were Organic Chem I & II, Biology, Philosophy, Statistics, College Algebra, Introduction to ethics, 2CLI (intro to college blah blah required for my program) and Writing I&II. My Cumulative GPA is 4.0.
For my sophmore fall I am registered for A & P I, Gen Chem I, Calc, Spanish II, Independent study (Non-western Ethics) & a CLI. My Ochem professor has offered me an opportunity to do research with him and so I'll be doing that as well.

As for the summer, I am currently in Kenya shadowing a physician and doing some volunteering at a local hospital. I am also keeping a journal comparing the health systems in the states and in kenya.

How am i looking so far? Are there other things that i should be doing? Any comments would be helpful.
Thanks

Hi! I live in MA right now but grew up in FL (so I'm hoping to qualify for FL residency) with a 36 MCAT (11 PS, 13 VR, 12 BS), and 3.7 c/s GPAs. I also went to a competitive undergrad school, so I'm not sure how my GPA compares with averages

I have research, clinical, volunteering, and shadowing experience, and I'm currently in the middle of a 2-year clinical research position. I'm also a non-trad applicant who spent a year working in a non-medical field after college

Here is my list as of right now... I'm worried it's top-heavy so please let me know what you think! Should I take out some top schools and add in others I'm more likely to get into? (I'd really like to have a list of 20-22 schools to apply to)

MD PharmD considering MD – 3.96c GPA 4.0science, ECs, research, help with ECs

Hello All,

I am a PharmD student in my final year and have started to question where my passion in health care truly lies. Throughout the last year, I have had surgery myself as well as witnessed my grandmother’s hospitalizations, each time interacting with doctors and seeing their impact in healthcare on a different level. Through these experiences my interest has really grown in becoming a physician – I feel my impact in healthcare may be greater there than as a pharmacist.

Regardless of my decision, I have a three-year Naval commitment to complete. I’m thankful for this experience, as it will provide great opportunities to serve this country and gain many life experiences. So I have some time to build competitiveness, and I would like some input on how to do so.

As of today, here is where I stand:

NO MCAT yet – waiting to take until two years into my naval commitment.

GPA
3.96 cumulative undergrad
3.74 cumulative graduate so far
3.9 something science GPA (if my A- in biochem is factored into my 4.0 science)

ECs
- Undergrad research project: 200+ hours, lab based, non-published, dept. honors
- Community Care Clinic – indigent population – 20 volunteer hours (many more this summer and next year)
- 12 hours volunteering with Kroger – wellness clinics, BPs, glucose test
- Other clinical pharmacy experiences throughout curriculum, interacting with other health professionals

- 40 hours volunteering at summer camp – construction work
- 40 hours volunteering at SOS Memphis – construction work, interacting with people
- University concert band member, 2 years
- Freelance musician for a few performances
- 1000+ hours campus church volunteer
- 10 hours – Global connections volunteer, providing furniture to international students

Planned ECs
- Shadowing anesthesiologist and ED physician (met during my surgery)
- Hopefully shadowing internist and radiologist
- Volunteering at local hospital throughout summer and next year
- Continued volunteering at community care clinic
- Coordinating trips to and volunteering at local soup kitchen throughout next year

How do my current and planned ECs look? What other ECs could I be doing to immerse myself in medicine? I’m going to have to be creative the three years when I’m with the Navy, as I’ll be working then.

I do need to take a full year of physics yet, most likely at a community college; I’ll probably throw in a psych/sociology course to brush up on those as well, as MCAT changes.

Thanks for reading and for any comments/suggestions.

MD Establishing Cali residency for easier admissions?

My dream med school is UCSF but they accept 80% in state students. I've read for tuition purposes you need to live there 366+ days and be financially independent. I'm graduating next spring (May 2014) and will be ready to apply to med schools June 2014 for matriculation Fall 2015. If I live and work in Cali for the gap/application year, can I be considered a Cali resident? This is more for admission purposes though tuition would be ideal too!

Please let me know!

Hi everyone,

I'm really struggling with MCAT VR. I have been consistently received 11 and 12 on both PS and BS section, but really low score (5-6) on the VR on practice exams. I have 3.85c GPA, 2 years of research, 2 years as a chemistry TA, and good Extracurricular activities. I am planning to apply for the coming cycle.

What do you think my chances are for mid-tier schools? Will the school consider the fact if english is my second language?

Thank you for your help,

Hi Folks,

My GPA is stellar, though my college isn't exactly the most competitive in the country. My MCAT score is acceptable, though I honestly believe I could score several points higher if I retook it. I've had summer jobs over the years, great letters of rec, I'm an accomplished trombonist, though I haven't done as much shadowing as I'd like to. By my count, I have about 45 lifetime hours of shadowing, much of which happened right at the end of high school. I'm an OR resident, so obviously I'm applying to OHSU, but I literally have no clue where else I should look. Anyone know which schools are most likely to accept an out of stater like me? Would my chances increase dramatically if I had a higher MCAT score? I don't care about getting into the best schools. As far as I'm concerned, an MD is an MD. Thanks for the help!

MD To wait... or not to wait?! Canadian looking for MCAT score submission advice!

So I've been a lurker here for the past couple of months. I'm a Canadian resident looking to apply to AMCAS this cycle.

I'm retaking my MCAT on June 20th, having taken it once last year and got 33 (14/7/12). The 7 in verbal is obviously not good, hence the retake. I kind of bombed the verbal the first time because I was too nervous. My average for aamc practice tests was between a 9-10, so I'm hoping for something in that range this time around. My ECs is average I'd say, but a little bit short on clinical experience (about 40 hours in total so far combined of shadowing and hospital volunteering). cGPA is about 3.95 on AMCAS scale. I'm finishing up my application, so it should be ready in a week or so.

So here is my dilemma... I know the state schools, unlike Canadian ones do rolling admissions, so the earlier you submit, the better. My new MCAT score won't be released until July 20th. Option 1: I indicate that I'm going to be retaking, so then they won't look at my application at all until mid-late August, or option 2: I just submit it now with a low verbal but hope that that submitting it early helps.

I guess my question boils down to... how much does delaying the application by a month from June to July matter overall? I'm not very familiar with the states system, so if anyone would be willing to give some advice, I would really really appreciate it!

Here are all the schools I was looking at:

SUNY Upstate
Kentucky University
Hawaii University
Michigan State University
Albert Einstein University
Dartmouth University
Wayne State
George Washington U
Georgetown University
NYMC
Case Western
Jefferson
Oakland
St. Louis
Boston University
Chicago Medical School
Medical College of Wisconsin

Thank you in advance :)

DO What are my chances? Advice needed!

Hello everyone! This is my first post and I am in desperate need of advice as well as opinions on what my chances are.

cGPA: 3.78. sGPA 3.7

Clinical experience:
-CNA at nursing home for two years.
-Emergency department scribe for one and a half years with extra responsibility of training those who are newly hired.
-Job shadowing osteopathic physician for 150 hours in the emergency department.

Volunteer experience: Over 1000 hours
-Hospice
-Women's resource center
-Various local organizations which provided clothing/furniture/shelter
-TA for cell biology and biochemistry
-Organic chemistry tutoring

EC activities:
-Member of four honor societies
-President of ACS local section chemistry club

Job experience:
-Organic chemistry TA
-General chemistry TA
-Science department tutor

Research:
-Presented two times at national ACS conference concerning research performed at college.

Practice MCAT:
-Scoring within the 28-30 range

I am applying to five schools.

MSUCOM
LECOM
CCOM
DMUCOM
UNECOM

This is my dilemma. Last year I unfortunately took the MCAT during a time in which I was receiving a great deal of medical work and I did not perform to the best of my ability. Due to my performance, I chose not to even attempt applying because I was so unhappy with my score.

My question is should I submit my AACOMAS now, or wait until the middle of August when my second MCAT will be resulted? I know that admissions will see my first score, but should I submit now with indication that I am planning to retake?

What are my chances and what should I do?! Should I apply to a broader selection of schools?

Hey all,

So I am graduating for a prestigious public school with a degree in Political Science and a whole hell of a lot of science classes along the way.

First year: 3.5 gpa took the gen chem and bio
Second year: messed around too much and screwed up so 3.0 along with a C in Intro ochem, bacteriology, and parasitology and a D in second semester ochem
Last two years: got my act together, retook ochem 2 and got an AB, did well in physics. GPA for the last two years is 3.83 (with a lot of adnvaced level poli sci in there). I did take a two credit virology course and got a C because I really put minimal effort into it.
Lap semester: last semester of college. taking statistics and possibly physiology.

Taking the MCAT on June 20th. By my practices so far ive been getting 26-28 and intend to do way more obviously so I really plan to get that up to at least a 30.

Been doing research since 2007. First just statistical analysis at a medical school and now on a variety of studies at a hospital. Looks like I can get some good letters from the doctors I've worked with.

Lots of shadowing for the past two years with all the doctors I have worked with as well as a lot of clinical experience working.

Vice President of my fraternity.
4 years of consistent volunteering. (will get a letter from there too)

Only one letter from a hard science (immunology) but others from doctors, research coordinators, volunteer leaders, global health professors, and political science professors.

SO, I have been seriously considering doing an SMP to get that science gpa up. I am not sure if it is even worth it for me to apply this cycle because of my poor performance that second year.

Advice would be appreciated.

Ok, i know many of you will see this and immediately say to give up, and i am not sure that i can do that yet. First, let me tell you my terrible situation, then my plan to fix the situation as much as possible.

So, i just ended my sophomore year and i have a 2.4 cumulative gpa. How did it get like that? Why would i let that happen? Well there were some problems relating to my family but in the end it was mainly my fault and i have no real excuses. Yes, i'm stupid for letting this happen. It gets worse... but let me explain my stats until this year.

Freshmen year first semester i got a 3.3 which is not even good. But second semester is where it went dooooown... i got a 1.79. C's in every class (including gen chem II and a bio course) THEN... an F in a class not related to science. I decided ok time to pick it up, but no i did not.

Sophomore year first semester i got a 2.7 and then just like second semester freshmen year i got a 1.8 again sophomore year second semester. I got a C in Orgo I and a C in a different Bio course first semester. This is where it gets even worse... the 1.8 second semester sophomore year came from getting a C- in a Bio course(not passing)... and the real real bad part... an F in Orgo II, honestly i thought i was going to get a D+ which is not much better but apparently i did worse on the final than i thought. Anyways i have this 2.4 Gpa now.

Many of you will tell me to just give up which is what i have gotten with some people that i have told my situation too but let me tell you my plan.

So first i plan on retaking every science class that i obtained a C in during the summers and getting A's in all of them. So this summer i am retaking gen chem II which i got a C in, plan on getting an A in that. I plan on retaking both Orgo's and the Bio courses in the upcoming summers, including the summer after graduating as a senior, and getting A's in those. Aside from that i am obviously going to try to get A's these next two years, almost all A's. Now that is very difficult and almost unrealistic but i created a schedule relating to my next year class schedule and plan on staying in the library and studying until night time everyday. I have realized the horrible situation I am in and although it may be too late, i can make the best of it. I may take some of the Bio course redos during the school year my senior year. I also got a C in a statistics class sophomore year first semester, should i retake that class?

As for EC's... i have none. But i plan on volunteering during the winter and am going to search for some research and shadowing opportunities for next summer.

I know Med school in near impossible and this is why i am looking into DO schools because the grade replacement policy. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. I know post bacc can possibly be very helpful as well. Please let me know your thoughts.

I basically applied to every single low-mid tier OOS private school along with ~5-6 OOS public schools close to my state. thanks everyone! I am a bit worried that my application won't be too different.
I will change my PS and activity section a bit, but mostly it will be the same. If anything my GPA will be lower due to my last semester of college.

Was complete at about 27 schools, was complete around late august to early september and bit top heavy. Got 5 interviews total low to top tier.
