Thanks in advance for all the responses :)

Currently in the process of applying for schools and wanted to get an opinion on my chances/what schools I should add/remove from my list. I expect solid LORs. Ohio resident. Traditional applicant.

Here is some suggested information to include in your thread. This is not an exhaustive list but should be considered the minimum to accurately help you:

-Stats
sGPA: 3.62
MCAT: 28O, second pending score from 5/11*

-Clinical volunteer activities
48 hours at hospital
-Research
100 hours on grant proposal, wrote abstract for this as well
-Employment
40 hours/week as a scribe in an ER, 10 months so far, still employed

Basically I'm a US resident adn citizen, but graduated from St. Andrews University in Scotland in 2011 and have spent the previous 2 years taking my prerequisites (Bio, Gen Chem, Org Chem and Physics). Biology's grades are pending this summer, but the other 3 averages at 3.62. I averaged a 31-33 on my tests for the most recent MCAT, but am waiting to hear back. Here's a list of my schools so far:

Virginia Commonwealth School of Medicine
Eastern Virginia Medical School
UVA
Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
George Washington
University of Louisville
University of Florida
Albany

I'm largely looking at staying in-state (VA) for med school due to my undergrad, but its not by any means a requirement. So, what are other places you'd recommend applying? If you have any experience/knowledge in the matter, will my international undergrad hurt or help my application?

Thanks!:)

Hello everybody. This is my second app cycle and I really want to make it count. Got into the masters in pharmacology program at Tulane and I am hoping the first round of grades will help boost me over the edge this round. I have significant (years) of volunteer experience because I really have a heart for it. LORS are ok as I could never form very strong relationships. Tons ( years)of clinical experience through medical scribing shadowing and volunteering. Really strong experience in multiple states.

Weakness I was told by admissions officers at LeCOM, UCF, EVMS and KCUMB were: weak essays, lacked commitment and a post bacc program at a rigorous institution. Well I got the essay fixed and I am now at tulanes program. 2 out of 3 is really the best I have. My school list is

Hi all,
I'm a NYS resident and not an URM. My stats are: 3.54sGPA, 3.7cGPA, 32T MCAT. I also have good ECs (including paid clinical work, AmeriCorps community service, leadership, etc)
If anyone can offer up some schools to apply to to make my list "broader," I'd appreciate it!

So far of course I have all my state schools (SUNY Stony Brook, Downstate, Buffalo- which are pretty much my top choices). Unfortunately, with my stats, most of the private schools in my state (NYU, Columbia, Cornell, Mt Sinai, etc) are likely to be (out of!) reach schools.
But when I look through the MSAR at out-of-state private schools, it seems like a lot of schools I see have stats similar to the SUNY schools, and since I'm not too sure I'm even going to get into one of those, I'm not sure where to even begin adding some OOS-friendly schools. (A few that had average stats below mine, I did some more research and found they do tend to support URM students, of which I am not considered).

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! I know the whole acceptance process also depends on interviews and the like, but some guidance just in picking schools would be much appreciated!

Thanks :D

I graduated high school in 2011. I had a 3.7 unweighted gpa and got a 33 on the act. I was also an elected offjcer of nhs.I got accepted into U of M Ann Arbor and went into pre-pharm with aspirations of being a pharmacist. I completed my first semester with a 2.9. Gpa. Not long into winter semester, while home, I got arrested for domestic violence. I had to leave U of M because the DV led to a lot of missed class time.

I decided to take a breather year at this point, w a total of 22 credits I figured I wouldnt lose to much time. While home during this past year long break, I was arrested again for domestic violence. I received misdemeanor convictions on both counts and was sentenced to 6 days in jail and lots of community service. Both times I was drunk.U of M gave me 2 years from winter 2012 to return before I have to re-apply, so I could return without them knowing my criminal history as late as next winter. However it was very very tough there, I really had to work hard to get that 2.9 my first semester. I have heard other schools, particularly ferris, have much easier pre pharm courses. Obviously a U of M degree would earn more respect, but in the end a degree is a degree and it wont affect your income much.

So my questions are, #1. Would I still be accepted to other Michigan undergrad schools (such as MSU, Ferris State, etc.)? Im highly confident they will not turn me down based on academic achievement or personality, after all, U of M accepted me. But these 2 misdemeanors really scare me about my chances of pursuing my dream of working in the med field.

#2. Would these 2 misdemeanors affect my chances for getting into a doctorate college of pharmacy (assuming I keep a gpa of 2.5 or higher), again such as MSU or Ferris or Wayne

Hi- I have a very strange application and applied since 2011 times with only landing on a couple waitlists to speak of. I'd greatly appreciate input.

I have a 3.6 for two years and then a 2.9 Jr and Sr year, including an F and retake, overall-3.2 sc-3.4. I took the MCAT midway through and scored a 35x (omitted writing section).
I worked for two years and have strong research background w/ two papers.
I went back for masters and completed with 3.6, doing well in the medical school's first year biochem and physio courses. The first MCAT was old so I took it last summer and got 13/10/P/14.
I have several clinical, volunteer, and leadership experiences throughout undergraudate and after.
I have (seemingly strong) recs from my research job and activities and recently from my coursework.

I applied very late to 8 schools and got two in-state / local interviews (Jan, Feb) and was waitlisted at both. I get that the decisions were late in the cycle, but students were definitely accepted from later interviews. Speaking with people in admissions, I've received inconsistent, vague feedback on how to improve for 2014. I've gotten various feedback on my personal statement and it's not great or horrible, though a little dry / could be more personable.

Nonetheless I feel like I'm overlooking something that's a serious mark against me. Should I just shut it and apply early this time and be happy to get in anywhere, or is SGU or DO the likely outcome here?

Thank you for any help, understanding, resolution.

MD & DO Which schools have academic medicine focus?

Which MD and DO schools focus on academic medicine / research, NOT primary care / under-served / private practice? I have a ton of research experience, and want a research focused school (although I am not doing MD/PhD) that tends to produce physicians that become med school faculty, run labs, teach, etc.

I have lower stats - the lower ranked school/easier to get into, the better. So I guess the question is more like: which schools focus on academic medicine / research and are low tier?

FL resident. Not urm.

So my primary applications are complete, but my list of schools is much too long and I want to do something about that before AMCAS submissions open on the coming Monday. Otherwise I will be neck-deep in secondaries. I want to consider removing schools that I probably have little/no shot at by virtue of either GPA/MCAT. I may also want to add any schools I have missed that I am a good fit for. Any feedback welcomed.

2014 graduate of a top 5 ranked university (US News & World), committee letter from them, etc.

MCAT: 32S - 11P 11V 10B

ECs:

1 year of tutoring child outpatients once a week at a hospital's dept of child psychiatry

1 year of weekly volunteering at the hospital's emergency department

Began part-time work as research assistant at an on-campus bio sci research lab as of Feb (~14 hours a week) but switched to full-time as of May (~40 hours a week). Switching back to part time (10-15 hours a week) in September and continuing until graduation.

Along with my GPA and MCAT, I have decent ECs. it looks like I only have about 150 hours total that I will be able to include on my application (50 volunteer, 50 clinical research, 50 shadowing, a few assorted EMT hours (less than 20)). I can speak and write about them in a meaningful way, which is why I didn't think my clinical hours were a concern, but now that I've actually laid them all out on paper, it seems quite...paltry. I will be continuing my clinical work throughout the next year, and the rest of my application is quite strong. One of the pre-allo threads had information that some schools (well, at least one) screen people out based on the number of clinical hours they have listed - would I be in danger of being screened out of a significant number of programs? Thank you!

also, not quite sure if this is the correct place for this thread...

Hi Everyone!

I just took the MCAT May 30th so waiting on those scores, I averaged around 28 in practice so I'm thinking somewhere around there.

Biochemistry Major, MA State School
Science GPA: 3.76
Cumulative GPA:3.82

Dual Citizen France/ USA and bilingual
2 years research experience in Bio-Medical breast cancer (700 hours)
D1 Club Athlete all 4 years, captain senior year (1500 hours)
Volunteering during the summers at hospitals (~100 hours) (A little on the low side because of annual travel out of the country)

I was wondering what my chances would be with MD schools knowing that my MCAT may be below the 30s.

Also, would it be a good idea to retake the MCATs if I do receive below a 30 before applying this summer if I want to pursue MD?

Thank you again!

MD With my Stats, can I get into any texas medical schools or any MD schools??

Graduated from a well reputed Texas school. My cumulative GPA is 3.1 and my science GPA is also 3.05.
Took my mcat the first time a year, didn't prepare very well so I got a very low score.
I have applied to Texas A&M Bio medical sciences non-thesis masters program and will be starting this August. I am planning on retaking my MCAT this june.
I have a lot of extra curricular activities on my resume. I have done shadowing. and have volunteered at a hospital, hospice etc..
I also have research experiences.
So my question is,
1. I have registered to take my mcat this june but don't think I am very well prepared for it. I want to move it to end of July. Is that a wise decision?
2. Reason I am doing a post back program ( 18 months) so that I can help improve my credentials. I am planning on getting atleast 3.5 and up in this masters program. Do med schools expect you to finish your masters degree before giving you a acceptance letter?
3. Should I apply this cycle with my stats or next year??
4. Do I have any chances getting into any texas medical schools or any schools for that matter??
5. What else can I do to help my chances??

I know my numbers are good (3.69 cGPA, 3.73 sGPA, and 33 MCAT (13 PS, 9 V, 11 BS), but I was wondering how my EC's are? Am I fine with what I have?

Clinical Experience:
- Have been volunteering at a free clinic since this past August; 3 hours per week (~125 hours total); lot of patient interaction; we get to take their vital signs and record their complaints/symptoms
- Volunteered as a care extender in the hospital from May 2011 to February 2012; 4 hours per week (~100 hours total); lot of clerical stuff and answering phones involved, but there is still some patient contact since we go around and talk to patients, see if they need anything, etc. I didn't get as much out of this as my free clinic gig; also, I did leave during the middle of the program (didn't complete the full year)
- Shadowed a neurosurgeon for 15 hours and general surgeon for 20 hours (both in the OR and in clinic); definitely got something out of it
- Went on a medical mission trip to Panama; we took their histories and assessed their conditions; measured their vital signs as well; proposed possible diagnoses to actual doctors; this was only for 1 week though (~50 hours)

Research:
-Been working in an interventional neuroradiology lab since August 2011; this is clinical research, not bench research; putting in around 5 hours per week; led a couple of my own projects; my abstract got published in the Stroke Journal (supposed to be one of the best), and I presented a research poster for my project at the International Stroke Conference (sponsored by the American Heart Association)

Non-Medical Volunteering:
-Circle K International- very involved in this during my junior and senior years; ~400 community service hours and ~1000 administrative/social hours put into this; also held a LEADERSHIP POSITION as an officer for a year
-Habitat for Humanity- went on a Spring Break trip where we built houses in New Orleans; ~50 hours total

Tutoring:
-Been working as a tutor at a tutoring center; most of the students there are underserved/disadvantaged

Miscellaneous Activities:
-Been a part of a fraternity since the beginning of my sophomore year; was the scholastic chair for a year; been putting in ~400 hours per year, although most of it is social; I imagine it would help with well-roundedness
-Had a job freshman year at the campus cafe
-Been participating in a culture club and club tennis (moderate level of involvement)
-Participated in a study abroad program in Europe through my school; 5 weeks long; definitely a lot of fun, and I can say that I got a lot out of it; program was about European history
-Hobbies- been playing chess and tennis for 10+ years now; I joined club tennis here at my school; we didn't really have a chess club or anything like that

I just graduated from UConn (CT resident) with a BS double major in Biology and Psychology, neuroscience minor. I took the MCAT last summer and got a 28, which I was not happy with. I applied last year, interviewed at UConn, waitlisted at a few places, no acceptance. I am retaking the MCAT in about a month and I am applying MD again for this coming cycle.

GPA=3.72, assuming I get a 30 (hopefully higher but assuming a 30) on the mcat where should I consider applying, being a CT resident.

15 activities:
1. French horn player (~11 years, tons of ensembles, regionals/all-state etc.)
2. Hartford Hospital volunteer (5 years, 5 units, 340 hours)
3. Doctor shadows (4, 2 this summer lined up)
4. UConn marching band (4 years)
5. Pre med society involvement
6. UConn Pep Band (4 years)
7. Kappa Kappa Psi (4 years, Music Service fraternity)
8. HuskyTHON (raises money for childrens hospital)
9. Section leader (2 years) and Band Captain (1 year) of Marching Band (leadership roles)
10. Behavioral neuroscience research (1 year, 2 posters/presentations)
11. EMT-B (2 years, volunteer)
12. Vice President of Service for my fraternity (leadership role)
13. Hartford Hospital Fall Prevention Study research assistant (1 year)
14. Patient Care Assistant at Hartford Hospital (oncology, started this summer)
15. Wrote research grant for my neuroscience lab

I will probably not be applying to many top tier med schools if any. But I would like some feedback on my EC's and on where I should be looking to apply, especially since CT has few med schools.

I am Asian Indian, USA citizen, Live in NY. Applying as economically disadvantaged. I received need based aid from FAFSA,TAP, and FAP approval. Not sure how much economically disadvantaged helps but adcoms please let me know.

I'm open to any American schools DO or MD. My stats are weak so if anything I will try to apply broadly to DO schools based upon feedback.

Mcat: PS 9 VR 5 BS 11, total 25

science GPA 2.73
Overall GPA 3.04

My extracurriculars are not stellar either:
1200 hours volunteering at church, non Clinical

For clinical experience, I did 40 hours working with 2 children with cerebral palsy. I worked with them in a pool and designed activities to help their cause.

30 hours shadowing an internal medicine MD. With recommendation letter, expecting a relatively good letter

20hours shadowing gastroenterologist DO. With recommendation letter, expecting about average/okay letter

How risky is it to go for Caribbean schools? If any, I would like to go to SGU. Are my stats good enough? How about post bacc programs for DO or MD, which if any would I qualify for or be competitive for? Is it recommended that I retake the mcat? Any recommendations to guide me forward would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am a 27 year old midwestern, non URM, non-traditional student applying strictly to DO schools. Here are my stats according to AACOMAS:

Bachelor of Arts in Pscyhology (2008) from big midwestern state school

GPA
cGPA: 2.80 sGPA: 3.21

MCAT scores
MCAT #1 (09/2012)-23 MCAT #2 will be taken on 07/26/2013

Work/EC experience
-Youth Psych Ward Tech-3 years paid experience--> roughly 6000-7000 hours since I was full time
-Big Brothers/Big Sisters Mentor during traditional undergrad for one year
-University Program Council board member-2 years during traditional undergrad-Brought event speakers, concerts, various events to campus and community
-Fraternity officer for 2 years during traditional undergrad
-Currently work full time in corporate insurance (I know, so cool!) since 2012
-Begin volunteering for Red Cross next Monday and will volunteer 3 hours per week

Shadowing
-20 hours shadowing an Internal med DO at the hospital--> I observe during patient rounding with the attending who is a DO, residents, and med students which is attached to the state medical school here.
-10 hours shadowing a family med DO in a private clinic

No research experience

Here are my Pre-med science grades that I have completed since 2010: Gen Chem 1-C+, Gen chem 1 lab-B-, Gen Chem 2-C+, Gen Chem 2 lab-B, Gen physics 1-B-, Gen Physics 1 lab, B, Gen Physics 2-A-, Gen Physics 2 lab, B, Bio 1 + lab (molecular/cellular)- B, Bio 2 + lab(org/pop.)- B+, Biochem- B+, Genetics-A, Microbiology- A, Immunology- B+, Orgo 1 + lab-B-

Plans
I know that grade replacement will be my best friend for my situation. I can re-take 3 courses that I got a D in during my freshman and sophomore years in 2004 and 2005. This would bring my cGPA to a 2.97. Also, considering re-taking gen chem 1 to hopefully bring the cGPA above a 3.0, and one of the 3 courses that I plan to re-take counts as a science course and would bump my sGPA to a 3.3 if I get an A. I plan on doing re-takes a the CC level for grade replacement due to costs and hope to submit AACOMAS after MCAT #2 late august when scores come back

Chances? Better to wait for next cycle? Sorry about the length.
