MD Student Conduct Violation

$

0
Hey, I was wondering if the following violations would severely impede me from getting into medical school

Residence Life and Housing policy on alcohol

University Alcohol and Drug Abuse Policy by possessing or consuming alcohol under the age of 21 and for purposefully misrepresenting himself or deceiving others, making false reports of emergencies, lying, or creating, using or possessing false documents, identification, or access devices

intentionally misusing, damaging, or tampering with fire or other safety equipment, including covering or disabling a smoke detector

the first two violations happened during my freshman year (over 3 years ago)

I plan to explain myself on the AMCAS with the following statement:

During my freshman year, there were two instances where I was found in violation of student conduct. My first violation occurred while I was in my friend’s dorm room. As a result of loud music coming being played in the room, an RA was called to tell the residents to turn down the music. Upon entering the room, the RA found a large number of people in the room and alcohol present in the room. The RA then deemed it was appropriate to write everybody in the room up. Consequently, even though I had not been drinking, I was written up because I was one of the many individuals in the dorm room when the RA walked in.
My second violation occurred while I was walking back to my dorm room one night. A school cop stopped me thinking I had consumed alcohol during the night. The school cop then asked to search me and I complied, trying to be as cooperative as possible. The school cop then went through my wallet and found a fake ID with my picture on it. As a result, I was reported to the school was thus charged in violation of the school’s student conduct but no legal actions were taken against me. I immediately completed the requirements of my sanctions.
During my senior year, the school found me in violation of the fire code. During winter break, my RA inspected every room in the building I lived in. While inspecting my room, which I shared with my roommate, my RA found some wall decorations hung up by my roommate that were in violation of the fire code because of the proximity of these decorations to the fire alarm in my room. As a result, he reported us to the office of campus life. My roommate and I were not aware that these decorations were a violation of fire code and immediately placed them elsewhere, away from the fire alarm, when we were notified. Upon speaking with the school, a counselor within the office campus life acknowledged that the placement of the decorations was an honest mistake.
I deeply regret the lapse of judgment I exhibited during those two instances during my freshman year that resulted in conduct violations. I have since tried to portray myself in manner that accurately represents who I really am – a committed scholar and community member. As a result, aside from the honest mistake in how my roommate and I decorated our room during our senior year, I have exercised good judgment and have not had any conduct violations since my two violations during my freshman year. As I mentioned before, I learned from these two violations during my freshman year and have grown a lot since then, thus I am certain that such lapses of judgment will not occur in Medical School.

I know it's a lot to read but I was wondering if anyone can give me any insight if these infractions will offer a major road block in my application process.

Thanks.

MD Which schools are reasonable?

$

Hello everyone,

The reason I'm posting here is because I wanted to get some input on what schools are reasonable for me to apply to.

White male, 23 years old, 5th year senior, Wisconsin resident
My EC activities:
In-vitro Alzheimer's research: 65 hours
Clinical (free clinic/orthopedic hospital) volunteer hours: 206 hours
Organic chem/General chem/physics tutoring (employed by university): 209 hours
Non-clinical volunteering: 17 hours
Hobby (6 years martial arts, earned a green belt in Doce Pares Eskrima): 1200+ hours
Other work experience (restaurant employee): 2200 hours
Shadowing (orthopedic surgeons) - 44 hours

I know my EC's are kind of weak (not nearly as much shadowing as some of you other rockstars!) but my GPA is a 3.963, double majoring in Kinesiology and Biochemistry (I graduate with KIN next semester, then one more semester to finish biochem). I've pretty much gotten close to 100% in any science class I've ever taken (biochem, physics, all gen chem/ochem, anatomy, etc.) and I made sure to get letters from these professors (I've got like 10ish, my adviser is cool enough to keep them on file and pick the good ones for me), as well as letters from the docs I've shadowed/the manager of the free clinic I volunteer at. I have not yet taken my MCAT, I'll be studying 10-12 hours per day til July 26th, I've been studying for a while yet. Lets say hypothetically I get a 34 on my MCAT (I have yet to do an AAMC practice so I couldn't really tell you how I would actually do...).

Here is the current list, I know some of these are a real big stretch but my parents are lending me the money for the application, and it makes them happy to see that I put some big name schools on there (despite their future dismay lol):
Dartmouth
Hopkins
Yale
Loyola
Mayo
Northwestern
Stanford
Cornell
Pritzker
Wayne State University
University of Illinois
University of Minnesota
Medical College of Wisconsin
University of Madison Wisconsin
University of Michigan
Rush Medical College
Rosalind Franklin School of Medicine
Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine

I may want to add a few more reasonable schools to this list, does anyone have any suggestions? Also, is applying to schools like Yale/Hopkins a straight up waste of my parent's money?

Thanks!

MD 3.0 GPA from Canadian School But US Resident

So basically I'm from McMaster University in Canada but am a US resident (live in California). I have 2 years left and about a 3.0 GPA (my science GPA is a little higher). If i apply to universities in California would I count as an out of state student or not? I have yet to write my MCAT and I do have quite a bit of ECs. Also I was offerred an acceptance into a very exclusive program at my school - Honours Biology and Pharmacology Co-op. Currently I am in general science and the courses would be a lot easier than this Co-op program. Do you recommend entering the Co-op program despite having more difficult courses? - Also co-op requires me to do a thesis which I'm worried about.

MD & DO Chiropractor applying this cycle, WAMC?

I don't want to walk into next year thinking I left any stones unturned, so I wanted to gauge what my chances were for MD/DO admission as a non-trad. I am a 32 male Chiropractor in Florida, been practicing since 2007. My assumption is that I would need to pursue allopathic schools that will review my application as more than MCAT and GPA(if they exist). I wish I could take back my UG from 10+ years ago, but alas, I cannot. My main concern with MD vs DO is cost of schooling. Public allopathic schools in FL will save me quite a bit of money versus private DO schools as I already owe $200k in loans. Onto the meat and potatoes of my application.

The Good:

Team physician for high school rugby as well as our mens club.
3,800+ hours of community and out reach service from 2009.
Worked in a multi-disciplinary practice with multiple MD's of various specialties.
Dean's List multiple semesters during my postbacc
Self-directed Postbacc of 28 hours @ 4.0 gpa.
Clinical TA during Chiropractic school.
3 week medical mission trip to Viet Nam
3 strong LoR's from philosophy professor and 2 science professors from postbacc
2 strong LoR's from DO (ortho surgeon) and MD (gen surgeon).

The Bad:
self-calculated gpa on pad and pencil.
BCPM gpa of 3.0 (will know for certain once I submit my amcas?)
Overall gpa of 3.1 (will know for certain once I submit my amcas?)
MCAT of 27 (9/9/9)

I feel a bit more comfortable with my DO applications. My DO gpa's are 3.54s 3.32c after factoring my postbacc retakes.

If allopathic is out of reach, it's out of reach. I will do my best in either school (MD or DO), the goal is to get accepted somewhere.

I appreciate your thoughts.

So, this is going to be my 4th cycle. It is my last one so it needs to count.

I'm applying to my 2 state schools (LSU), probably TCOM, and William Carey in MS. Are there any others that I should consider? State options are FL, AL, NC, SC, LA, TX, OK, ND, WI, MN, IA, NE, GA, VA. Are there any schools (MD or DO) in these states where I would have a good chance of getting an acceptance?

I've never gotten an interview anywhere. But, my application is still under review with one of my state medical schools???!!! Don't really know what to think of that considering it is June.

I'm nontrad, married with 2 kids, former math teacher, worked as a tech in the ED for 1 1/2 years. I finish my SMP in August. I gave the list of states because that's where my husband could find a job and are agreeable to us to live in. Can't really move just anywhere because my husband is the breadwinner.

Undergrad Cumulative:
3.35 BCPM
3.46 Overall

3.35 PostBacc GPA

3.37 Graduate BCPM
3.54 SMP GPA

28M--8/10/10 (07/16/2011)
21P--8/8/5 (08/2010)

Thanks!

MD With the AMCAS opening up, Im doubting things

I graduated 2 years ago with a 3.0 sGPA (worked full-time during undergrad). I did 6 months of clinical volunteering in Africa upon graduating. Last year I worked full-time for a non-profit thanks to my microbiology degree, Ive clocked in about 200+ hours shadowing a physician overseas (each summer for the past 3 years in South America).
4 months ago I decided to get ready for the MCAT yet I only took the studying seriously for the past 4 weeks. Now I am taking the MCAT NEXT WEEK. I havent had a full practice test (since the first time I took it in 2011 and got a 7/8/7 VPR) as I feel I am not dominating the material yet. In addition I have yet to finish my personal statement and receive my LoR.
Basically Im feeling unsure whether I should apply this cycle or wait another year to better of my application. Any thoughts will be much much appreciated!
Also Im a 25 yr old hispanic male

What are my chances with this set of info:

MCAT: 30
GPA: 3.4
Good extracurriculars (volunteering, shadowing)

But with C in Orgo I, D in Orgo II and Physics II

Everything else is an A (with a few B's)

I would like to know if it is likely I would get into at least a couple MD schools in the USA?

And also, if there are any good international American schools outside the Carribean that would take me otherwise

Thanks!

MD Academic dishonesty infraction kill my chances?

So last semester (sophomore year) I was charged with an academic dishonesty infraction due to plagiarism on a philosophy paper. What had happened was (stupid mistake) I had forgotten to include my bibliography with my paper before I'd turned it in, although I had completed it with all the appropriate sources and did not realize until after I had been notified of the infraction that I must have forgotten it, though I could've sworn I included it. Would you say my chances at med school are completely destroyed, or could I still have a chance if I honestly explain my side of the situation?

MD & DO Entering CPR Certification in AMCAS

Hey everyone,

I'm tryin to include that I'm CPR and First Aid certified in the works/activities section but I'm not sure what to put for the "hours" part. I was certified and still am, but I'm not an EMT so I don't have a chance to practice it at all for hours. What should I do? Just put down the time until it expires? I just put it in the Awards section for AACOMAS. That was easy.

MD & DO What are my chances? Where should I apply?

Hey everyone, this is my first post here and I'm looking for some input on schools to apply to ...

General
-CA resident
-Undergrad at McGill University - bachelors of science in agriculture and environmental science
-cGPA = 3.5, sGPA = 3.6, MCAT 28

Extra's
- 1 year research experience - 2 publications pending (one second and one third author)
- 2 summers shadowing orthopedic surgeons
- 2 summers volunteering in hospital recovery unit
- 3 years tutoring calc I/II and Organic Chemistry
- EMT abroad for 6 months
- 2 summers volunteering in hospital recovery unit
- on the executive of a student club for 3 years
- 2 very strong LOR's and a third that is a bit generic
- 4 summers working as a barista ... not sure of the relevance but it happened haha
- other various volunteer experiences
- experienced and avid rock climber .. makes me interesting?

I'm a california resident but my gpa/scores are too low for any UC school - is it worth applying to MD programs or should I stick to DO's?

Thanks!

30 is obviously a lot of schools, hoping to get advice on how to trim it down. I know NYU, Sinai, Rochester are probably reaches, especially without good research experience but any of the others seem that way? Also I know the Jesuit schools tend to look better on clinical/volunteer work, any of that type I overlooked? Also I know my GPA/MCAT is near to sub average for most MD's, planning for 3-4 DO schools in addition, would it be wise to add some more DOs and cut out a few on this list?

Reapplicant from last year. Applied to 22 then receiving two interviews from Univ. of WA and NYMC. Primary sent in August, secondaries by October. So pretty late, have everything ready to submit in June this time around, hoping low yield of II's was primarily due to late app.

I am applying Monday and need some last minute help with my list. Any comments/advice appreciated. Suggestions on substitutions/removals/additions are great! I can afford 15 schools and am looking for a nice school that will land me a good residency, but also that isn't the most expensive out there (although some on my list are rather pricey). Love California but recognize the schools are all pretty competitive.

Like almost everyone else on this thread, I am having a pretty tough time creating a school list. I am striving for 20-25 schools and so far my list is ~30. CA resident btw.

I've looked through the MSAR and created a list based off of locations that I would like to be in and/or GPA/MCAT. I am still having such a hard time bringing the list down. Many people here have suggested looking into mission statements but when I do I feel that some are pretty vague. Would anyone be willing to tell me the red flags (e.g. not OOS friendly, too many applicants, etc.) and the specific criteria (e.g. rural, urban, specific race, specific state, primary care focus, global health focus, research focus) of each school on my list? Or even other interesting tidbits about them. I feel like there is a lot to each school that is not listed in the MSAR and was wondering if you all had miscellaneous info about these schools to share with me that might help me narrow my list down based off of my interests :) I know many of the red flags for each school, but I just can't bring myself to cut a lot of them out because I just really love some of them! At the same time, I want to be realistic which is why I still have a lot more schools on here. Thanks!!

MD Will my lack of stellar ECs hurt my chances? 3.8 cGPA, 3.86 sGPA, 39 MCAT

Hi all, thanks for taking the time to help me out.

I am a traditional applicant and would love for your opinion on my chances at some of my top choices. My ECs are unfortunately not as great as the ones I have seen on here, but would you consider me competitive for mid to top tier schools despite that flaw in my app?

TX Resident
Biology Major at top 10 school
3.80 cGPA, 3.86 sGPA
13/13/13 MCAT

My ECs are very heavily research based, and even then I feel it really pales in comparison to some of the ones I have seen on here. How do you guys even manage to find the time? Not really hating, just thoroughly impressed.

Lab Tech for 2.5 years --> ~3000 hrs
1 Research Fellowship
2 publications
2 posters
--------------------------
2 jobs as a Teaching Assistant
1 Leadership position in a Student Organization
-------------------------

Here is where my weakness really shows unfortunately. I don't have that many hours invested into clinical activities.

40 hrs Shadowing
~200 total hrs. combined volunteering at two separate hospitals
------------------------

Those are my ECs, and I'm really not quite sure what to think when I take a look at some of the posts here. While I understand my academics will get me past screenings, I am genuinely wondering how much my ECs will hold me back.

My number 1 school that I would pick over everything else is Baylor University.

The other schools are as follows:
· University of California-San Francisco
· Harvard
· John Hopkins
· University of Washington
· University of Pennsylvania
· Northwestern University
· University of Chicago
· UT in Houston
· UT in San Antonio
· UT in Southwestern Medical Center
· Cornell
· Tulane
· St Louis U

I'm still trying to figure out the rest of the list and am changing things up, my heart is unfortunately just really set on Baylor.

Oh, also, if you have time, it would be great if you wanted to interject some schools you think my stats would be a good fit for so I can have a starting point for researching. Thanks so much!
