3.82 cumulative GPA
3.6-7 science GPA
MCAT: 37 -- 13/10/14 (Phys - Verb - Bio)
ECs:
--Shadowed anesthesiologist, internists, family practice, opthalmology, emergency, cardiology, and will be adding more in shortly.
--Currently doing cancer research this summer and into next fall, potential to be published in the future.
--Volunteer work as a Spanish interpreter at a subsidized clinic in my city (~75hrs so far). I also get to shadow doctors in many specialties through this.
--American Studies Institute Distinguished Student. Lecture series for juniors/seniors with a certain GPA and that are members of honors college.
--Medical Brigade in Nicaragua (~300 hrs). This was a teaching brigade for med students, I was the first student to do a homestay and volunteer in the emergency room in a rural hospital there. The organization is repeating my experience with 5 other students this year.
--Internship in Ecuador (~300 hrs). Taught English at a school, lived in an orphanage. I will be returning this summer for a few days and also interpreting for a medical brigade in the rain forest.
--Mu Epsilon Delta (MED). Pretty much a med club.
--Internship in rural Honduras (~1000 hrs). Interpreted for groups and worked in clinics etc.
--Fraternity member (4 yrs)
--Sorority 'beau' (2 yrs)
--Performed in school musical (2 yrs)
--Lead mission campaign to Vancouver, participated in one to Maryland
--Service project director for freshman orientation (projects for ~600 people)
--Student Government Senior Rep (1 yr)
My biggest weakness is probably my lack of research in undergrad. I went to a school that did not provide any research opportunity and did not really decide to do med school until very late. I moved to a new city and took a few classes at a university which has allowed me to get a research spot for at least this summer and maybe into the fall to do presentations.
The card that I can definitely play is underprivileged work and the fact that I speak Spanish and have interpreted a lot in medical settings is a large part.
I guess I am trying to get a feel for what caliber of schools I can look at applying to. I know my MCAT and GPA are at least competitive for some upper tier, but i'm not sure if my ECs support them.
I am a white male and my state of residence is Pennsylvania.
What are some schools you would recommend? I am putting together my list as I just got my MCAT back yesterday.
Some schools i've thought about:
1. Penn state
2. Pitt
3. UPenn
4. Temple
5. Jefferson
5. Vandy
6. Duke
7. UAMS (Have connections here)
8. Georgetown
9. Baylor
10. Emory
11. Boston U
12. Wash U (St. Louis)
13. Yale
14. Stanford
15. Loma linda
16. George Washington
17. Harvard (just for kicks and giggles)
This list is probably extremely top heavy. My plan for the next few months is to MCAT tutor at night after research and i'll be applying to a bunch of research assistant positions.
Thanks!
