E/C's:

I have no research experience. I started as a RA in a psych health study but the PI no longer needed me after my 3rd week, so I'm not even reporting it. Right after this, I started teaching MCAT classes and that took up most of my time outside of school. It's difficult to get research experience where I live now (no research centers nearby). This is arguably one of the weakest parts of my app, so if anybody has any advice on how to deal with this, please let me know.

WORK
Held part-time 15-30 hours/wk jobs throughout all 5 years in college.
1 yr at Starbucks
2 years bartender/server at restaurant
2 years MCAT Instructor for Kaplan Inc. (applied immediately after receiving my 35 MCAT score, I have good/excellent feedback from students and faculty managers) LOR from Manager

Clinical Shadowing/Volunteering
Shadowed/internship @ Orthopedic Surgeon's practice for 6 months after graduating UCLA. 3 times a week, 8 hours at his practice. Observed 10 surgeries. LOR from physician

Shadowed a pediatrician for a day.

Volunteer at non-profit hospital: twice a week working directly with patients and hospital staff in the orthopedic department. I began in Apr 2013 and have committed to a year of service. LOR from Nurse Manager in my department

Volunteer at local Indian Health Clinic diabetes program, starting next week.

Hobbies:
Web Design (designed a physician's website)
Computer repair and assembly for over a decade.

Awards/scholarships:
Made deans list 4 semesters at my JC
Made deans list, got straight As, for last 2 quarters at UCLA
Earned a merit-based Native American scholarship throughout all of college.

Thank you for any and all advice.

MD & DO Schools to add; 3.73 cGPA, 3.65 sGPA, 31 MCAT

Hi all; new member looking for some thoughts.

I've conversed often with my pre-med adviser about this (and have edited my list multiple times as a result), but I'm still trying to figure out a couple more schools to add to my list.

Socio info: a female and an IL resident, graduated this May, will be taking a "gap year" to work in a Chicago research lab as a lab tech.

College: Located in the Midwest; ranked in the top 20 of U.S. universities
Major: Biology
cGPA: 3.73
sGPA: 3.65
MCAT: 1st time: 29R (12 VR, 7 PS, 10 BS); 2nd time: 31 (11 VR, 10 PS, 10 BS)

Research: 2 college years in a breast cancer lab at the nearby MD medical school

Clinical Volunteering:
-75 hours, patient escort (4 semesters of college)
-70 hours, PEDS (2 semesters of college)
-40 hours, ER (1 summer)
-50 hours, PACU (1 summer)
-320 hours, free clinic (summer service program; 40 hours/week for 8 weeks)

Shadowing:
-15 hours, internist MD group; hospital
-9 hours, family med DO; office practice
-"informal shadowing" at the free clinic; worked with doctors every single day and did all kinds of tasks for them/saw them interact with patients.

Volunteering:
-4 years, student host
-2 semesters, student manager (for varsity sports teams)

Jobs:
-1 semester, tutor
-senior year, RA in my dorm

Other ECs:
-3 years of a research scholars group selected by the university (discussions, events, lectures, etc.)

LORS: committee letter, which includes letters by two bio profs, a psych prof, clinic coordinator where I worked for a summer, my PI for my research lab (a med school professor); all should be very strong (knew all personally very well). Plus a letter from the DO I shadowed for the DO schools I'm applying to.

Finally, my current schools list:

MD:
-Rush
-Rosalind Franklin
-Loyola
-Indiana (my uni is in the state and my PI is a prof at one of their campuses)
-Georgetown
-Saint Louis
-Cincinnati
-Case Western
*No Illinois because I only took 1 social science course (I still can't believe a state school has so many extra course requirements...)

DO:
-Marian
-LECOM (PA, FL)
-NOVA
-PCOM
-CCOM

So I'm contemplating adding one or more of the new Michigan MD schools (my clinic was in MI and I really enjoyed the setting); no Northwestern because I talked to my adviser and basically found out anyone from my school who has gotten in has had a 35+ MCAT.

Any other schools that I should consider? I would like to apply well enough so that I don't have to apply to 20+ schools--but at the same time, don't want to apply to too few.

Thank you in advance!!

Hi all,

So I'm about to enter my senior year at my state school. I'm applying next cycle (as in June 2014). My breakdown on the MCAT was BS 13 V 12 PS 11. My Major is Biology, with a minor in philosophy. I've taken quite a few upper level bio courses, a good array of philosophy courses, and well beyond my required coursework in math (calc 1-3 +intro to linear)

Extracurricular
Co-founder, VP & Treasurer of a Club (will be 2 years at time of app). Also ave activities that go along with this. It is a sports club, so I'm not sure how much they'll count. But we are planning on doing some charity events next year.

Volunteer Work
3 Semesters volunteer tutoring for course (Cell bio/ neuro)
(hopefully)1 Semester volunteer tutoring for course (Endocrine studies)

Work Experience
Worked at panera bread for a summer in customer service
Will work as a tutor for the sports program all next year

Clinical Exposure
Will have about 100 Hours shadowing an ER doc (currently 50, but will be getting 50 -100 more between now and application date).

Letters of Rec
1.) from prof I tutor for. They're a good friend and I've little doubt it'll be great
2.) Doc I shadow; Knows me well from shadowing + has allowed me to assist (legally haha) him with simple procedures.
3.) Professor of endocrine studies. Cool guy who I've talked with a bit, I'll probably tutor for him in the future too.
4.) Biochem prof; went to office hours a couple times, taken both course and lab with him. Both A's in courses, and he is a really good writer, even if he is a little generic. Advisor said that it was a good letter.
5.) TBD... hopefully will get it from a philosophy professor. Have has a hard time getting access because most undergrad courses are taught by grad students.
6.) Comittee letter, (I should be getting it, but I won't apply for it until next year)

My main concern is a lack of clinical experience. I plan to get volunteer experience at a hospital over the next year, and am in the process of setting that up now.

So my first question is does my excess (I'm told I have an excess) in hours of shadowing make up for, in part, my lack of volunteer work in a hospital?

Second question is what would be the level of safety school i should be looking at (I guess am looking for examples)? I live on the east coast, but really am okay to go just about anywhere within the United States. Also, what would be a good reach type school? My adviser keeps telling me to apply to my state school, but it costs more/equal to go there (gotta love NJ) when compared to many out of state schools, so I'm really not bent up on going there.

Finally, as is apparent, I'll be taking a gap year. I have intentions in learning Spanish during this gap year, hopefully doing some traveling, and I'll be working as a tutor. I also plan to keep volunteering at the hospital. Is there anything else that would be beneficial for me to pursue during this year? I'm a bit nervous about it, as it will be the first time in memory where I'll be out of school longer than 3-4 months.

Thanks for your time, and i appreciate and advise/wisdom you can give to me!:)

MD Retake MCAT? (10,11,11 - 32), 3.24 cGPA, 3.14 sGPA after 3.97 postbacc

$

Do I need to retake a 32 to have a chance at MD schools with these stats?

Undergrad cGPA: 3.0
Undergrad sGPA: 2.9

4 years later:
Post Bacc GPA: 3.97 (45 quarter credits, all sciences--most upper division)
final cGPA: 3.24
final sGPA: 3.14

AAMC average: 35
Actual MCAT: 32

also: I have going on 5 years of experience as a cardiopulmonary tech and some decent volunteer experience. I'm hoping to have a compelling personal statement.

Will they really look at my post-bacc to show I'm capable of? If so, I feel alright about my chances with a 32 MCAT. What do you think? I know most of SDN are pre-meds with strong, uninformed opinions, but I figured it'd be a good idea to get feedback anyways, haha.

MD & DO applying broadly

I'm reposting this because i didnt get any good replies.

i'm determined to apply to 40+ MD schools and all of the 29 DO schools, but i'm trying to see if i can save some money, by applying to certain schools. or focusing on a few # of schools.

Can someone please tell me which schools are appropriate for me to apply to? I want to apply broadly, but I'm having difficulty determining how much is "broad" enough.
Stats are on the low end, hence my desperate question.
cGPA and sGPA around 3.09ish. MCAT pending, hoping for a 30 or more. I will reschedule if I feel that i cant get a 30 just yet. currently scheduled for july 2nd.
pretty good EC's, including research, summer enrichment program at my school (is this helpful?) volunteering with my Campus Ministry (such as church runs, food runs, etc) volunteering was never really consistent with only 1 org, but a lot of hours nonetheless.
i also have around 1400 hours of working as an emergency room medical scribe in 3 hospitals in the underserved areas of Milwaukee. (attending Marquette btw, which i feel was my first mistake but whatever, too late to dwell). Also I should mention that i have been on an upward trend ever since my 1st semester of freshmen year. every school that i talked to says that its promising but never really go beyond that. I KNOW My chances at MD schools are slim to none, I acknowledge that, but which ones approach applicants from a holistic perspective? I know tulane does. but thats about it. maybe Oakland?
i have the online version of the 2014 MSAR, and i basically applied to all of the low-GPA med schools in the US, not Puerto rico.

basically, which MD & DO schools are worth me applying to? also disadvantaged status, middle eastern (and african descent).

also i do have many unique things to share on my personal statement and strong LOR's, so i would hate to apply to a school that would just screen me off due to my low GPA.
Thank you.

So basically I'm a reapplicant this year and I need some SDN wisdom on what schools I should add/drop and whether I can actually get in somewhere this year given the following information:

cGPA: 3.75 (3.72 last Cycle)
sGPA: 3.59 (3.62 last cycle, I only took one science class senior year and got a B)
MCAT: 35O (12PS, 11VR, 12BS)
Graduated with two B.S. Degrees, MI resident, ORM male

EC's:
Member of marching band 4 years, 2 years in leadership role (~2500 hours)
Fraternity member for 2 years, with several leadership roles
150 hours clinical volunteering in different departments at local hospital
50 hours shadowing a hematologist
Research Aide for 4 months in genetics lab (~600 hours)
One summer working at Staples (~400 hours)
One year working at university's computer repair shop fixing laptops, desktops, ipads etc (~1400 hours)
20 hours volunteering for university's summer programs for HS students
50 hours volunteering at local food bank (New this cycle)
50 hours volunteering at local Habitat for Humanity (New this cycle)
Hobbies include playing and performing Piano,Trombone, and Carillon (clock tower bells) and music composition/arrangement

Here's the current list I have:
* Albany Medical College
* Boston University School of Medicine
* Central Michigan University College of Medicine
* Indiana University School of Medicine
* Keck Sch. of Med.University of Southern California
* Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medici
* Medical College of Wisconsin
* Michigan State University
* New York Medical College
* Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine
* Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine
* Rush Medical College
* The Ohio State Univ. Coll. of Med
* The University of Toledo College of Medicine
* University of Michigan Medical School
* Wayne State University School of Medicine
* Western Michigan University School of Medicine
* Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine

I'm thinking about adding a few more schools because I really don't want to have to reapply a 3rd time. Some schools in the list I am a reapplicant, some I am not.

I think part of the reason why I wasn't successful last cycle was because my last LOR wasn't submitted until late Sept, making most of my apps not complete until October. The one interview I had (at the highest ranked school on the list, go figure) said my LOR's were very good, however, So having them submitted to AMCAS already for this cycle should help immensely in that regard.

I'd appreciate any feedback you can give! If anybody would be willing to read my PS and give some final revision suggestions, I would like that too!

Lacked direction for my first years of college and my grades suffered. Unfortunately didn't realize what I wanted until my senior year. Oklahoma native and would love to go to OSU-CHS.

I have extensive shadowing experience everywhere from family practice, ortho surgery, general surgery, endoscopy, heart cath, and ED.

I have also worked in a hospital for over a year as an Inpatient rehab tech(which gave me a ton of patient care) and endoscopy tech.

I have solid volunteering and a letter from a D.O, two science professors, and an employer at the hospital.

I have only taken the MCAT once and came out with a 26 (9 PS, 9 VR, 8 BS) and have come to a point where I must decide if i would benefit more from retaking the MCAT or retaking gen chem I (got a C) and taking some upper division science to up my GPA. any advice? one or the other or both? just need some direction or advice.

And what are my chances applying with my current numbers? thanks!

I am new here and the reason I am here because my life is a total mess. Right now its my fourth year and i just finished half my credits and with a 2.2 gpa. most of my science i have Bs and 1 C+ in orgo2. I have messed too much in the first two years and now im trying to pick myself back up with getting A's. I am so discouraged that with my gpa i dont think i will be getting to med school. Columbia is my top but reality is never going to happen. I really want to go to medical field and the only choice. its not that the work is too hard but everytime I want classes that can make me organize my time I get left with crappy classes. I blame myself for everything in the past but i want hopee that i can. so.... what are my chances?

This will be my first thread and I really hope I could get some help from SDN here! I need your help with three things:

1) How would adcoms interpret my multiple MCAT scores?
2) Is my school list too top heavy? What schools put emphasis on volunteer and/or overseas experiences?
3) What are your thoughts on new schools? Is it a risk to attend a new school where systems might not be as developed as other older ones?

About myself:

NY resident, but ties to IN

Math major

3.83 cGPA
3.76 sGPA

MCAT: I took it three times and the most recent one was from April this year

9 P 10 V 6 B = 25
12 P 10 V 8 B = 30
12 P 8 V 11 B = 31

(The scores are increasing, but I am worrying about 8 verbal from the most recent one. I was certain I would get 10 at least, but I am still not sure what happened there. How would adcoms interpret this? I hope it won't be too much of red flags)

ECs: I have some unique ECs with heavy involvements in overseas. Some of the major ones are:

1) a semester abroad to a developing country for my own independent cancer project, working with a local breast cancer specialist
2) two engineering projects for water and electricity in developing countries which I traveled for weeks as well as worked on prototypes within college campus for several years
3) founded an organization and taught music to disadvantaged Hispanic students for free of charge for many years

4) 3 years of breast cancer research but no pubs, got NIH- and NSF-funded internships
5) 3.5 years of TA in multiple different subjects
6) 100+ hours of shadowing
7) 700+ hours of patient transporter in a local hospital
8) led a local engineering project for a middle school student with scoliosis for a year
9) Principal cellist in school orchestra and also traveled Europe for a concert tour
10) Habitat for Humanity for Hurricane Katrina relief and also traveled to Guatemala

I re-wrote the whole PS and many people agreed with me that this is far stronger than my PS last cycle.

I believe LORs are at least decent, if not strong. However, I do NOT have a LOR from a math professor, and I know that I cannot apply to NYMC since they require a LOR from my major department. I talked to them last year about this and I am not an exception since I am not considered as a non-trad.

Here's my school list:

Reach:

Columbia
Cornell
Mount Sinai
Northwestern
Case Western
Maryland
Penn State
Tufts
NYU
Emory
Einstein

NY schools:

SUNY Upstate
SUNY Downstate
Albany
Hofstra North Shore
Stony Brook
Buffalo
Rochester

Others:

IU
U of Michigan
UAB
Drexel
Jefferson
Temple
Georgetown
George Washington
Medical College of Wisconsin
Boston University

Quinnipac?
Western Michigan?

Thank you in advance for your time and comments! I am hoping to apply to 25-30 schools. I think my list is too top heavy, but I am not sure what other schools I should add.

DO 3.18 cGPA 4.0 sGPA 31 MCAT

Hello all,

I was wondering if you could give me some insight into my chances for acceptance into a DO program.

I have a strong upward trend with the last 60 odd credits at straight A's.

My science gpa calculated according to DO guidelines is a 4.0. For MD it's a 3.58.

I have about 100 hrs of volunteering with strong patient interaction. 200 hrs of shadowing with both MD and DO physicians. I have received multiple academic awards including a student excellence award from the philosophy department at the university I attend. I am also a member of the honors fraternity for philosophy majors.

I have started and successfully sold two businesses, ran and completed a marathon and have volunteered with multiple non for profit organizations. My total hours in service outside of the medical field is around 700 hours.

I have very strong LORs from my Orgo professor, Physics professor, and one of my philosophy professors. Also have very strong letters from both physicians I shadowed.

I work about 15 hours a week at a medical practice and help manage my wife's design studio.

I realize it comes down to raw numbers and the other stuff is fluff, but maybe you could also comment on my ECs?

Also, do I have any chance at MD schools?

Many thanks to all who respond. Wish everyone the best of luck and positive vibes.

My cumulitive GPA is 3.35, science GPA is 3.21, nonscience of 3.61 (all at Arizona state) and a MCAT of 30. I'm receiving letters of recommendation from a veterinarian I worked very closely with. She was really my mentor and pushed me towards medicine, and she has told me she is writing a very glowing recommendation. I'm also getting a letter from my neurobiology professor. I worked with him only part of the semester, and he admitted that his LoR isn't going to be very good (not bad, but not amazing). Unfortunately, thats the best I can do for now when it comes to LoRs from professors. I'm also getting a letter from a DO, and maybe from a MD.

I work in a hospital as a emergency room scribe and have a lot of experience there. I was promoted quickly to scribe trainer and ambassador. I'm highlighting the leadership oppurtunities I've had in these positions in my application and PS. I have a lot of volunteer experience, but mostly with animals at shelters. I do have some volunteer experience working with children at elementary schools. I also have work experience as an assistant at a veterinarian clinic, and I'm highlighting the clinical exposure (to another side of medicine) in my application.

I'm applying to:
AT Still in Mesa (My dream school!)
Arizona campus of Midwestern
Western University
Campbell University
and Edward Via

Are there any more schools I should add? Any glaring problems so far? Thanks for all your help!!

I attend a very small prestigious liberal arts college known for its academic rigor, particularly in the humanities core, hence the low cGPA. I am a biology major set to graduate next year.

-Director of the school's hospital volunteering program at the local rural hospital, 160 hours of service
-Will have accumulated over 200 hours of research by the end of the summer, mostly biochemistry research related to fetal alcohol syndrome and antioxidants with a great chance of getting published
-100 hours of shadowing, including cardiologist and pediatrician
-serious pianist for the past 13 years, perform 2 recitals a year
-Recruitment chair and serve on the e-board of my sorority
-have held a job since I was 15
-recently elected president of the pre-professional society after serving as the secretary for the year before
-a couple other volunteer organizations, such as a fundraising club through St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
-several honoraries

I studied for the MCAT while taking a full course load, and my scores were 9PS/11VR/10BS

The schools I plan on applying to (MI resident):
University of Michigan
Michigan State CHM
Oakland
Wayne State
Central Michigan
Western Michigan
Toledo
Mayo Clinic
Ohio State
Penn State
Wisconsin
Loyola
Indiana

I know some of these schools are big reaches, but I'm just being hopeful! I also don't want to go too far from home! Any thoughts? :) Thanks!

First off, I apologize for the redundancy, I know there are many threads but if someone can give me insight looking at my specific situation, I would really appreciate it. I am new to SDN so don't quite know where to post this, but here goes nothing. I am a UCLA undergrad with 3.0 science GPA (graduating this year). I know my chances of getting into a med school right now are pretty much none. I have always wanted to get an MPH after MD, so I applied to a few MPH programs since applying to MD this year was out of question. I got into Columbia's MPH program. But now after talking to a few people and visiting SDN threads, general consensus seems that in my situation post bacc/SMP will be a better options. But I am having really hard time saying no to Columbia. It seems like a great opportunity and will def help me become a more well rounded and knowledgeable applicant, but since I want to get into med school asap, is SMP a better option? Any thoughts?

My GPA is a solid 3.5 with a huge upward trend culminating in a 3.7 total for my senior year. I know my MCAT is a huge boost to my stats, but I'm having trouble formulating a school list. I am a PA resident who went to school at a private, competitive institution. I have a ton of leadership and community service experience (over 100 hours / year). I have also taught underprivileged kids biology and physics for a summer. I also tutored for my Orgo professor and was an undergrad TA for Bio. I have spent 64 hours in the ER doing coursework as well.

I graduated this past May and I am spending the year working as a tech in an opthalmology office where I interact with the doctors very regularly. My LORs are very solid as well.

I am just having issues with my school list at the moment. I have been using the MSAR but I would like to shave this list down to about 14 and I would love to hear some recommendations as well. I have a lot of reach schools on it at the moment. Thanks in advance!

Here is the list:

Emory
Columbia
Einstein
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
GWU
Georgetown
Tulane
Stanford
Brown
Vanderbilt
Baylor
Duke
Tufts
BU
NYU
Northwestern
Penn
