MD & DO Do I have any chance at all??

$

0
Overall GPA- 3.89

Science GPA- 3.91 (may be slightly higher)

MCAT (terrible) - 9 VR 7 PS 10 BS Total 26

Volunteering- mentor for various things (elementary school, for science fair projects, for marathon team), blood drive volunteer, hospital volunteer, volunteer for church religious classes (alot of my volunteering has to do with children)

Shadowing - none (planned on shadowing family doctor that fell through at last minute, I had originally planned on applying just MD because thats what I really want but with the MCAT score I received I know that is not an option anymore here is where I run into trouble because I know for DO I need to shadow a DO and I am running out of time because I want to apply for 2014)

Work - Graduated with a BS in Medical Laboratory Science and have been working full time in a hospital in the Blood Transfusion Service (2 years), Also at the same time at another small lab part time. Before graduating I worked as a CNA and lifeguard (had CPR and First Aid certification as well as CNA certification) -- Have had more than 1 job ever since beginning undergraduate school

For extracirricular activities- I was on my undergrad schools volleyball team for 2 years, health club, mls club, and I am an avid runner participating in multiple races per year and I am currently trying to set up my own race to benefit a non-profit

Sorry for the extra long post, Just wondering with my extremely low MCAT if I have a shot at any school and if so which ones I am just very confused right now.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Guys,

I'd really really appreciate some feedback. I got a 31 on my MCAT this month but it's unbalanced: 11/11/9 but I've chosen not to retake so I can focus on my other interests and I want to apply this cycle.

Female ORM PA Resident
My cGPA is a 3.74 at a top 50 private college in the MidWest.
My sGPA is a 3.70
Biology/Spanish Major
But both are on an upwards trend.
I am a rising senior.

Extracurriculars/Leadership:
~800 hours for the past year working towards bringing a Camp Kesem to my university.
[Led the initiative and won the Camp and a grant-- Camp Kesem is a camp for children with loved ones affected by cancer]
~50 hours last summer as an International Orientation Leader
~50 hours my freshmen year as a part of a leadership program
~50 hours from my freshmen year on as a representative of a cultural organization. Helped plan and PR for events.

Shadowing:
~60 hours mostly in Emergency Medicine, but some in Internal & Oncology.

Service:
~50 hours my junior year as a non-medical volunteer at an underserved nursing home nearby.
~50 hours my junior year as a book cart volunteer at the Cancer Hospital.
~30 hours my sophomore year as a part of Alpha Phi Omega ( Co-Ed Service Fraternity)

Research:
~400 hours for the past year( including last summer) as a student researcher at the Cleveland Clinic. I'm working on my own study under a project scientist.
~250 hours for the past three years as a clinical research associate in the Emergency Department. I'm the PI of my own study, I've heavily data-collected for studies, and I'm on the executive committee of a student led research team (I guess this also encompasses clinical and leadership) I've also given three poster presentations for this study.

Personal Statement is based on experience as a childhood cancer survivor and on cultural competence due to having lived in a few urban and rural cities growing up.

Hey guys I'd appreciate it if y'all could look over my stats and help me decide on a plan of action for this cycle. I recently graduated from college. TN resident.

3.71 cGPA, 3.56 sGPA, 27 MCAT (10 PS 9 VR 8 BS)

One semester of collaborative research at my university.

150 hrs shadowing (130 with various specialties (volunteer program) and 20 with a CMO)

4 non medical mission trips, including 2 overseas

2 years tutoring underprivileged kids

1.5 years doing inner city outreach

2 years volunteering with preschoolers 4-5 times a month

Member of 3 honor societies

Freshman orientation leader

Currently in the process of obtaining my EMT-B certification.

Plan on becoming involved in a tutoring program that works primarily with refugees.

I am aware that my MCAT score is low. Since I am currently taking an accelerated EMT course that lasts all summer, I'm unsure as to when I'd have adequate time to study for a retake. Besides taking the MCAT again, what else can I do to improve my chances? Also, what schools do I have the best chance at? Thanks!!

Hi. I need some advice on which MD schools I have a chance of getting in.
I did a double major, honors bachelor of science.

Junior GPA: 3.3
Senior GPA: 3.6
I also have a graduate degree (Master of Science, thesis based) with a GPA of 3.7

I recently decided to apply this cycle, so I'm feeling a little underprepared. Some info about me:
As stated in the title: 4.0 cGPA, 4.0 sGPA, 39 14/12/13 MCAT (just found out yesterday!)

Minimal shadowing (about 10 hours total, although I have more scheduled very soon)
No clinical (I'll start a clinical volunteer position next week)

Research:
One previous full-time summer position. Not much responsibility, just cell culturing.
Just started a position at my university which gives me a lot more responsibility. Just applied for a grant.

Extensive tutoring experience through my university, then through a private company.

Non-clinical volunteering:
Teaching science to kids at a local museum for one summer. Around 100 hours.
"Educational Outreach" at a local daycare - basically playing math games with kids. Just three times.

Other ECs:
Member of a competitive on-campus organization since freshman year. Leadership position since sophomore year.

Bad things:
I don't have a committee review letter from my university - missed the lockout date.
I have not one, but two underage drinking citations from my freshman year. One was dismissed, the other was a prayer for judgement.

I know my clinical/shadowing/lack of committee review letter is kind of pathetic, but my pre-health advisor told me I had a good shot this cycle because of my numbers, so I decided to go ahead and apply. I plan to get as much clinical experience as possible before my secondaries.

I'd really like to stay in-state, but que sera sera...

School List:
In-state:

Any advice is much appreciated!

Hey everyone,

My GPA is not great, but I stayed a fifth year in 2010 and got mostly A's to end on high note.
I believe my EC's are fairly solid:
I did half year of ugrad research + 2 years master's research
2 years clinical
1 year shadowing
1.5 years tutoring/leadership + TAing
Various trips to Mexico/Africa for mission

So here is the problem... 2 years ago I got a 31 on the MCAT, but on the April test I got a 26. Do I even have a chance anymore at any schools? Any SMP options? I think only option I have right now is to retake again and hope for 31+ to even have a chance. Any feedback would be appreciated, thank you. I know my chances are not too high, but I am still aiming for MD.

Research:
I have one publication from the lab im working in now and another one pending.
Wrote a senior thesis

Wisconsin resident. So, I got my MCAT score back yesterday and it was an absolute shock to me. It's somewhat balanced, 10 VR, 12 PS, 15 BS. Kind of changed my entire outlook on this application process, I feel like it's opened some doors.

My GPA is on the low side, but it's generally an upward trend (3.38, 3.12, 3.69, 3.87, 3.92, 3.7). I have one semester left, shouldn't be a very difficult semester. Should have another 3.7+ish. Applying this cycle, though, so that probably won't be factored in yet.

EC's are pretty generic, nothing great. I'll have:

2 semesters medically-related microbiology research (continuing into a third)
90 hours volunteering in an ER
1 week volunteering on an Indian Reservation (non-medical)
2 semesters pre-health club
A few other random clubs (eSports, microbiology)
Hopefully will just be getting employed as a patient care rep at a hospital/clinic (hear back this week)

My school list is just kind of altered by the MCAT score, I feel. My dream is to stay in-state, but if that can't happen I'd like to be close-ish. Current list is:

UW-Madison
Medical College of Wisconsin
University of Minnesota
Loyola
Indiana U
Rush
Drexel
Case Western
Oakland University

I'm not sure what would be a reach or what my chances even are. I have taken a semester off for personal reasons, I'm hoping that doesn't tank my chances. It's all Withdrawn, the whole semester, and didn't affect my GPA. So guys, any critiques on the list or commentary on my imbalanced GPA/MCAT match up? Thanks in advance!

Extracurricular

1 year of tutor/TA job for general biology I and II

1 year of being a student mentor (Volunteer work, about 70 hours)

About 7 months of being a Pharmacy Technician

About 1.5 years of being a Research Assistant, no pubs

Shadowing about 80 hours, orthopedic surgery, family med, internal med, pathology, anesthesiology, general surgery

Home health Volunteer (clinical) During 3 breaks over 3 years so about 72 hours

Volunteer Co-Coordinator for a soup kitchen ~110 hours for about a year

Volunteer Leader at hospital (Clinical) ~200 hours for 1.5 years or more

Taekwondo Master/Instructor volunteer ~200 hours for 9 years

Couple private scholarships
Award in Organic Chemistry (3 out of 500 people for doing the best in Orgo for entire year)

My home state is KS and I attend the University of Kansas.

I am most likely going for Early Decision for KU Med but I want to hear what you guys think if I should just do regular and try my luck at other places as well. So far I think my chances are slimmed down to only KU Med and I do understand it is my best chance.

The reason I am having second thoughts about early decision is because I am not too keen on staying in KS for about 4 years.

I was wondering if I am competitive anywhere else, I realize that my MCAT score is lacking but I do not want to retake it.

So what other schools do I have chance at? And should I do regular and apply other schools as well or stick with early decision for KU Med?

I appreciate all your inputs

General Stats:

Took the MCAT today and it didn't go well. I am going to retake if I get under a 30. I think I can prepare more.

Stats on Grades:

-Ugrad was 3.0sGPA, 3.3 cGPA thanks to rampant depression, now fixed
-Grad GPA (MS, PhD in neuro) ~3.65 overall, ~3.7 in science...my TA grades brought me down because I was an awful TA.
-Post-bacc 3.85, one withdraw b/c of a death in the family, retook to a B+
-Cumulative: 3.4 sGPA, 3.50 cGPA

Extra-curriculars:

- Research due to PhD (several posters, two published papers, another one by the end of the summer god willing)
- Lecturer in psych, which is my job, plus some work with underprivileged kids
- Freelance writer, writer for fun
- 78 hours ED volunteer
- 100 hours (by the end of the year) VA hospital volunteer - it's social programming in the clinics and around the hospital. Not sure if it counts?
- 300 hours of running an academic event (lots of planning, then executing it), as well as religious organization service (served on a committee, I'm sort of chair of it)
- Shadowed ~100 hours in neuropathology, 4 hours with a neurologist

Letters:
My boss, two science professors, my PhD adviser. The person whom I shadowed isn't writing back. The person who knows my volunteering the most isn't writing the best letter ever, so I may ask her to decline.

My dilemma:
I told my letter writers they had until 7/2, which was when I was getting back my MCAT score. If I need to retake, that pushes my application back until early/mid August. If I'm rocking a 30, with my mediocre GPA, I might not end up where I want to be.

Schools - Really trying to stay in the Mid-Atlantic/New England area
UMass (resident)
Tufts
BU - I have 2 degrees from there. That counts, right?
NY Medical
Hofstra
SUNY Downstate
Yeshiva (lol)

MD 3.71 cGPA, 3.53 sGPA, 31 MCAT

$

Hello! New to SDN, and this is my first post. I still need some help ironing out which schools I should apply to. (Let me know if I'm missing anything?)

I am female, ORM, and a PA resident.

College: Ranked higher than 15, NE region
Major: Neuroscience
cGPA: 3.71
sGPA: 3.53

MCAT is where things go downhill. I took it August last year and got a 32Q (PS: 9, VR: 12, BS: 11). I wanted to bring up my PS score, and retook on 4/26 and ended up with a 31 (PS: 9, VR: 11, BS: 11). As you can imagine, I'm still kind of reeling from the results, since all my practice tests were 34+ with PS scores of 10+. It's been incredibly discouraging, so now I also need help retooling my list of med schools to apply to.

(At this point, my advisor told me it's not worth it to retake it, and that I should just take my chances applying this cycle.)

Research:
-one summer in an immunology lab (got published; not first author)
-one summer and one semester in an ALS lab
-currently working on some clinical research in Philadelphia

Clinical Volunteering:
-100 hrs in a free clinic

Shadowing:
-30+ hrs psychiatrist
-1 week program shadowing doctors of many specialties: surgeons, endocrinologist, rheumatologist, ER doctor, geriatrician, and internists.
-15 hrs shadowing radiation oncologist

Volunteering:
-3 years in peer counseling group (co-director in my last year)
-2 years in sexual assault hotline

Other ECs: art (received art awards), 2 yrs as associate editor and layout editor-in-chief on an undergraduate public health journal, 1 yr in a group that goes out to K-8 grade to teach neuroscience presentations, 3 yrs in Nu Rho Psi.

I am getting 2 LORs from neuroscience professors, 1 from the advisor of the peer counseling group (which should be VERY strong), and 1 from an art professor I've had for the past four years. They should all be relatively strong.

EDITED: Here is my list of schools:

Baylor ? -applying b/c SO is from Texas

Brown ?
Case Western
Commonwealth
Cornell
Drexel
Emory
Jefferson
Maryland
Mayo
Northwestern
Penn State
