What the heck, it's winter break and I'm bored and I've started working on some parts of my primary app. I'm a senior graduating in May and majoring in medical microbiology and immunology.
cGPA = 3.86
sGPA = 3.84
MCAT = 37P (14P/11V/12B)
Extracurriculars
* Research
- Two years basic science on prostate cancer
- One paper (3rd author) submitted
- Multiple independent projects
- Writing 1st author manuscript
- Included a fair amount of teaching of new postdocs as well as having a high school kid work under me for a summer
- 7 months of clinical/translational research on renal cell carcinoma
- One paper (2nd author) that will hopefully be submitted by the end of the month
- Presenting at state-wide conference in March with strong potential to be awarded best abstract (at least according to my PI...)
- Continuing both of these research jobs over my gap year
* Marathon Running
- Have currently completed 3 full marathons with a PR of just under 3:20:00
- Will have completed 5 fulls by the time I apply (assuming no injuries, of course)
- Also did two half marathons in my time at college
- Plan on doing an Iron Man in my gap year
Clinical Volunteering
- One semester in cardiac unit as an inpatient host (3 hours/week)
- One semester in children's hospital as a teen room volunteer (3 hours/week)
- One semester and summer in a free health clinic (13 hours/week - ~200 total hours). Substantial interactions with patients and the physicians of the clinic.
Shadowing
- 4 hours of internal medicine resident
- 13 hours of urologist
- Scheduled to get another 20 hours or so this winter break at a local hospital (including endocrinologist, internal medicine, and surgery). Want to be at 50+ hours by the time I apply, which shouldn't be a problem.
Campus Crusades for Christ
- Involved for all 4 years of college
- Led a bible study for 2 years
- Weekly meetings and bible studies, monthly conferences, etc...
Generic Volunteering
- 20 hours teaching basketball one summer at my home town's summer school
- 25 hours helping with my mom's library program for children
- 40 hours coaching a youth baseball team
- Probably more I'm missing at the moment
Paid Employment
- One semester as a janitor for a residence hall
- One summer as an assistant recreation director for my home town
- Research was also a paid position for parts of my time there
* Most significant
I believe those are pretty much it. I'm probably missing a couple small things but I think I covered most of my ECs. Here is my school list:
UW-Madison (IS)
MCW
Dartmouth
Vermont
Mayo
Northwestern
Emory
Vanderbilt
Duke
Johns Hopkins
Mayo
Chicago
Cornell
Columbia
Mt. Sinai
Penn
UCSF
Yale
Wash U
Michigan
Too top heavy? I chose my list as it is because I'm highly interested in a career in academic medicine. Any other advice? Thanks!
