Hey guys, I am about to graduate and I know that I am on the lower end of competitive right now so I was hoping to get some advice on what to do next.
Here are the details:
Took the MCAT in September: 27P. VR: 10, PS: 9, BS: 8
I am signed up to retake it in April, but I am considering maybe postponing that because I will have classes as well. However, I do want to apply in this upcoming cycle so I want to take the MCAT early so that I can apply early.
English Major on academic scholarship. Minors in history and chemistry.
cGPA: 3.445
Sci/Math GPA: 3.256
ECs:
Honors Program
Honors Program orientation leader
TarHeel Outreach Program, Committee Member (bring underprivileged students to campus to get them interested in college)
Shadowed in private peds, Peds ED, and a new born clinic
Volunteer at the cancer center in the cancer patient support program
Red Cross Club: Outreach Committee.
A few habitat for humanity builds
Clean up occasionally at the Ronald McDonald House and have cooked a meal or two
Nanny for two summers
Weekend babysitter
Child care worker at a community center
Possibly this next semester I will have an internship in patient communications in the neurosurgery wing and be a data collector for a clinical trial in anesthesiology (have interviewed and am waiting to hear back)
I am aware that my sci GPA and MCAT put me on the lower end so that's why I am taking a year off and am just wondering what you guys would advise I do. Perhaps take a few post-bacc classes at a local college in upper level bios and get the grades up? Retake the MCAT? SMP program? I would like to apply in this upcoming spring cycle, but I know I need to boost up my resume with some things while my application is out - so what do you guys suggest?
And I know several people will suggest DO schools, which is a fine idea. I am not biased against them in any way and I think they are a great option, but I would rather receive advice on getting into allopathic schools. Ever since I was a kid I've dreamed of that MD after my name and that's still my dream so allopathic is the way I want to go.
