I am a 27 year old midwestern, non URM, non-traditional student applying strictly to DO schools. Here are my stats according to AACOMAS:
Bachelor of Arts in Pscyhology (2008) from big midwestern state school
GPA
cGPA: 2.80 sGPA: 3.21
MCAT scores
MCAT #1 (09/2012)-23 MCAT #2 will be taken on 07/26/2013
Work/EC experience
-Youth Psych Ward Tech-3 years paid experience--> roughly 6000-7000 hours since I was full time
-Big Brothers/Big Sisters Mentor during traditional undergrad for one year
-University Program Council board member-2 years during traditional undergrad-Brought event speakers, concerts, various events to campus and community
-Fraternity officer for 2 years during traditional undergrad
-Currently work full time in corporate insurance (I know, so cool!) since 2012
-Begin volunteering for Red Cross next Monday and will volunteer 3 hours per week
Shadowing
-20 hours shadowing an Internal med DO at the hospital--> I observe during patient rounding with the attending who is a DO, residents, and med students which is attached to the state medical school here.
-10 hours shadowing a family med DO in a private clinic
No research experience
Here are my Pre-med science grades that I have completed since 2010: Gen Chem 1-C+, Gen chem 1 lab-B-, Gen Chem 2-C+, Gen Chem 2 lab-B, Gen physics 1-B-, Gen Physics 1 lab, B, Gen Physics 2-A-, Gen Physics 2 lab, B, Bio 1 + lab (molecular/cellular)- B, Bio 2 + lab(org/pop.)- B+, Biochem- B+, Genetics-A, Microbiology- A, Immunology- B+, Orgo 1 + lab-B-
Plans
I know that grade replacement will be my best friend for my situation. I can re-take 3 courses that I got a D in during my freshman and sophomore years in 2004 and 2005. This would bring my cGPA to a 2.97. Also, considering re-taking gen chem 1 to hopefully bring the cGPA above a 3.0, and one of the 3 courses that I plan to re-take counts as a science course and would bump my sGPA to a 3.3 if I get an A. I plan on doing re-takes a the CC level for grade replacement due to costs and hope to submit AACOMAS after MCAT #2 late august when scores come back
Chances? Better to wait for next cycle? Sorry about the length.
