Hey everyone, I would just like some input as I finalize my list. I have an average GPA and average EC's, which is a little worrisome. I would like to get a feel of how competitive my application is for schools in the Northeast. I'm currently an MA resident, and I would like to stay along the east coast if possible.
Here's the breakdown:
22yo male, Asian Indian, First-Generation College student, MA resident
GPA --> cGPA = 3.65 and sGPA = 3.55
I started with a 3.6 cGPA freshmen year, and then went downhill my sophmore year. My Sophmore GPA was a 3.3, and then my junior year it was a 4.0, and now I'm on track for a 4.0 my senior year. I don't know if you can call this a trend, but my overall GPA looks kind of luck a 'U' curve.
MCAT (9/1) --> 36R - 14/10/12
EC's --> I think they are pretty generic, and they are probably the weakest part of my application along with my sGPA... Here they are:
Volunteering
1. Tutoring high school students that speak English as a second language in math and science. I mainly taught algebra and geometry, and in addition I helped multiple students prep for the SAT's. Around 50 75 hours per summer since 09. Total = 200-250 hours
2. 1 year member of Student Food Rescue Each member partakes in one or two runs per week where we pick up donated foods from places such as Wholefoods, Starbucks, local bakeries etc. And then we drop off the food to shelters throughout the city. 2 Semesters, Total = 100 hours
3. Volunteer at local Hospital in the SDSU and the cancer treatment center. My responsibilities in both of the departments was to escort patients in and out of the waiting room, tend to them in the treatment room, and provide snacks and linens. In addition, I would help the nurses out with their duties. One semester at each department. Total = 100 Hours
Shadowing
1. Shadowed an Internal Medicine Physician in my local town. He also sees patients in the ER, and so I got to do rounds with him on a few occasions. Total = 40 Hours
Research
1. 2.5 semesters of Clinical Research The research that I focus on is the neuroimaging of people who have Panic Disorder. We are trying to identify the pathway that is involved in panic attacks, and whether or not the physical symptoms are different in healthy controls vs. panic patients. I have been named the third-author on one abstract, and we are in the process of writing another paper in which I would be third-author. Total = 500 Hours.
Work
1. Undergraduate Assistant in Biology II lab 1 Semester. Total = 60 hours
2. I am in the process of getting a medical scribe job for my gap year.
Other
1. Intramural Volleyball 3 Semesters. Total = 75 Hours
Thank you in advance for your help everyone! I REALLY do appreciate it! :love:
