My Story-
I am currently a second semester junior. I started off college weakly, mostly because of not knowing exactly what I wanted to do. By the end of my freshman year I had the goal of making it to med school and becoming a doctor. Unfortunately the beginning of my sophomore year I needed heart surgery (second in two years) and my GPA took another hit. Since I have had a strong upward trend. I feel that DO may now be my only shot and will probably apply to about 10 DO schools this cycle.
Stats-
GPAc-3.25 expected upon applying
GPAs-3.32 expected upon applying
MCATS-taking in June
EC's-
Work in a local emergency room as a sec/tech, by the time I apply I will have over 1,000 hours.Certified EMT( I know its nothing special but I put it to use in the ER) I am involved in several different clubs on campus. I will have 100 hours volunteer time doing various things. I am also scheduling shadowing times for DO's that work in the hospital I am at and am always around patients and doctors at work.
LOR's-
I will have several strong LOR's, possibly including doctors I work with (one doctor went to the school I feel I have the best shot at), and the former CEO of the largest hospital in my state
Whats holding me back-
Obviously my low GPA, but with a strong MCAT score a well written PS and my LOR's will I be able to offset that? Do I have a shot at getting in this cycle or should I save my money and build on my application. Should I work on research at all? I plan on applying within the first week of this cycle to up my chances even more... But really what should I do? is my GPA going to hold me back too much to the point where I have no shot? Chance me please..
