Hey SDN,
I'm in the process of building my school list. Could someone please give me advice on how to balance the amount of dream/realistic/safety schools? I was planning on applying to +20 schools. Luckily money isn't an option, it all comes down to the effort/benefit ratio of applying to a lot of schools.
Quick summary: URM, 35 MCAT (11ps/12vr/12bs), ~3.7 GPA (bio major). By the time I apply I will have strong LOCs, average volunteerwork/shadowing, normal ECs, several international clinical experiences, and a TON of research at a very well-known, highly regarded research center (i'm a research tech).
I know based on AAMC's stats in the stickied thread that I have roughly a 90% chance of getting accepted somewhere based on my stats. I figured that gave me a bit of leeway to be top heavy in my list.
Dream Schools (not in any particular order) (I'm below average according to 2011
LIzzyM spreadsheet)
1. Harvard
2. Johns Hop
3. Stanford
4.Columbia
5. Mayo
6. Cornell
7. UCSF
8. U of Washington (my state school)
Good Match (I'm above average according to LizzyM spreadsheet)
9.Emory
10. Brown
11. Vanderbilt
12. Einstein
13.Boston
14. Penn
15. Georgetown
16. George Washington
Safety (I'm more than 1 std. deviation above)
1. Rosalind Franklin
2. Drexel
3. Jefferson
4. Temple
5. Tulane
6. Wake Forest
7. ?
8. ?
So yeah, any advice? And just to reiterate, I realize that this is probably top heavy. But i figured if I'm going to apply to a lot of schools I could take a few more risks. And once again, I based everything off of the LizzyM spreadsheet. As for the last 2 safety schools...I frankly dont know enough about the lower tier schools, but I plan on adding a couple more to even all the categories out.
Thanks!
