I got a letter from Harvard the other day encourage me to apply. They specifically mentioned that they are looking for people from a diverse cultural background who come from economically disadvantaged families. My question is, are they just hoping to get my application fee? Is it even worth the trouble of applying?
I've got a 33 (11/11/11) and a 3.62 GPA (Physics B.S. with Music Minor). I only decided I would like to go to medical school a year ago (during my 5th year at college). I don't have much experience volunteering or shadowing (about 40 hours so far). My parents are missionaries so I grew up in the Philippines. I came back to the U.S. for high school, graduated valedictorian, and went to college on a full scholarship. I've been working full time since my fifth year of college and I have tons of extra curricular activities. I think I'm a fairly unusual "non-traditional" applicant, but I just don't have a lot of the credentials that other applicants have (medically relevant research etc . . . ). What do you think? My current plan is to apply to all the Texas medical schools (I'm a resident). I'd like to go to U.T. Southwestern or Baylor, but I'd go anywhere that accepts me.
