I'll preface this by saying that I didn't know I wanted to go into medical school until my junior year and only recently seriously decided on MD/PhD. My research, which is the most important part, is lacking, so I'm considering doing a master's in the field I'd like to do my PhD in to get 2 more years of research and a master's thesis (hopefully another publication).
I'll list my stats now, and what they should be after i finish the Master's (Assuming I apply).
Before Masters
sGPA: 3.87 cGPA: 3.86
41S MCAT
300 hours hospital volunteering
100 hours plus shadowing a combination of doctors including primary care.
150 hours volunteering at a local library.
Active member of college Gay-Straight alliance
Founder and president of a secular student alliance on campus
Several mission trips to Africa and south america(Not one of the pay 2k for two weeks type deals)
Contributing writer to the school newspaper, submitted multiple creative writing pieces.
a year long independent research project that was presented at a forum on campus
1000 hours+ psychology research studying child abuse (Unfortunately wasn't very benchworky which is what I want to remedy with the masters)
3rd author on a paper published in journal of developmental psychology.
After Masters:
All of the above, plus a masters in neurobiology and behavioral neuroscience with a published paper and potential an author on several other papers. 2 years of benchwork lab experience. Experience teaching as a TA.
What are my chances at a top 10 MD/PhD with these stats. I'd like to do a PhD in neurobiology and hopefully get a residency placement for psychiatry.
