Hello all,
I would love some feedback on my extracurricular list! What looks good, what I should add, does it seem too checklist-y, etc. I am a sophomore hoping to apply in 2014. GPA 3.98, MCAT to be taken August 2013.
Research:
- summer of bench neuroscience research. Had my own project and considerable amount of autonomy. Got great LOR from lab director.
- semester and counting of neuroscience research at university. Currently working towards developing spinoff project led and designed by me.
- hired to be clinical research assistant for upcoming summer
Clinical:
- responder for on campus emergency response team (and leader of said organization)
- ~550 hours of hospital volunteering so far
- hired to be scribe starting August 2013
- ~150 hours of shadowing three specialists (one, ~100 hours, was more like an internship)
Non-Clinical Volunteering:
- teach swim lessons to kids
- perform rehearsed chemistry demonstrations for kids
Teaching (employment as well):
- design five week lesson and teach science to middle schoolers
- hired to be biology lab TA next semester
Employment:
- university tour guide
- run university pre-health program (advise students, host events, collaborate with faculty, oversee other pre health staff members, etc)
- intern for national injury prevention organization; designed and wrote 60 page book about safety to be published by state to be distrubuted to families statewide
Artistic:
- several poems and short stories published in national literary magazines
It all feels very typical. Since I have a year and a half left, this is the best time to make sure that I am on track. Also, if anything looks like fluff, that would be good to know so I could consider not including it in my application.
Thank you!!
