MD & DO Advice for a first time poster?

Ok, here is my story. Long time reader, first time poster. I've considered the medical field for many years, but always discounted it due to the many years of schooling and dedication. But medicine and just being able to heal someone back to health is just a fascinating and engaging field for me. After being the real world for about 8 months I realized that you will always be learning in your life, so you might as well get in to something that intrigues you and challenges you. I also realized that I wasted a lot of my abilities and time just coasting through school. I did not try very hard in school and regret not pushing myself academically. I've really started to mature and think about my future, my career, and ultimately my happiness.

I graduated with a bachelor's in communication with a minor in public relations with a GPA of 3.3. I work at cubicle job writing malpractice insure (a bit ironic). I was a member of the student athlete leadership team (charity work), and a varsity member of the schools cross country team. I worked while I was in school, had an advertising internship, and a big-boy insurance job. I haven't taken any of the pre-reqs and was looking to get started next semester. I have some initial questions. Does have a communication degree discount/or degrade my future applications? Should I go the bio/pre-med route? Also eventually I will have to quit my insurance job to take some classes during the day, what are some good jobs in the healthcare industry that will help me pay my rent? And finally what EC's are the best for down the road?

Thank you for any and all advice! :)
