Hello Student Doctor Network members,
Ever since I was around 11 I have wanted to become both a Police officer and a Doctor like my mother. I chose the route of Police officer due to the satisfaction of helping someone in need where your hand means everything in that moment of time, but this applies to the medical field as well. I wish I could of chose both but that is what I chose entering college, it was between the two. I was diagnosed with a Spontaneous pneumothorax late November early December. I was evaluated for 2 days in the Hospital and it was claimed to remain "stable" and I took this as good news. However several days later I woke up with more pain and went in to get my scheduled X-ray examination. The lung was now 40% collapsed and required a chest tube. It was my first "procedure" and I was nervous, it went by smoothly (The cracking in my chest wasn't fun but I was told this was due to my chest size and muscle). The E.R physician whom performed the procedure calmed me and performed it well. I felt safe in his hands. I had a chest tube in for 2.5 days and had it removed. I had a tingly feeling in my chest for about three days and then the pain reoccurred. It was to unfortunate to be true, the pneumothorax came back and I was told they would have to perform Thoracoscopic surgery which made me worried, it is close to finals week and I have already missed two weeks of classes. I ended up getting a second opinion from a well re known specialist and was told that what must have happened was the hole was not completely sealed but it was smaller in this X-ray than the one two days ago. Good news, I was given two choices and I went home with the choice of watching it and seeing it will go away on its own. I feel much better as if it is not even there. However this semester has been incredibly difficult, it is a new school and I transferred over from a community college into a State School. This semester (WINTER) I took Economy, Philosophy, Political science, Literature, and Sociology. I was able to get incomplete in them all due to my medical leave
but these are my expected grades.
My expected grades are as follows:
Economy: C+ to B
Philosophy: B
Political science: C to B-
Literature and Society: B+ to A
Sociology: B to an A-
My mother is the only one in my family in medicine and this event made me take a completely new outlook on life and where I want to lead mine. I want to become an E.R physician where I can truly help people. I need guidance, my school advisers are not to helpful and I have read so many stories online but non correlate to mine specifically.
I am thinking about switching my major to Physics and keeping a G.P.A of 3.6+ throughout the rest of college(2.5 years left). I speak Portuguese, English. I am going to volunteer at the hospital and shadow a E.R physician.
Will my grades that don't correlate to medical school applications matter? such as those above ?
My transfer from community college was Mediocre at 3.24, will this affect Med school chances even though my path at the time was different?
How can I make myself stand out when I apply to medical school? You guide me. All help is appreciated!!
Best,
IDR
