Hello all,
Everyone seems to be of such great help here, so now I'm looking for advice myself. Here are my stats/information:
Small liberal arts college
3.26 cGPA
3.12 sGPA
Major: Neuroscience
Minor: Math
MCAT: 30- 10, 10, 10- retaking in two weeks but might cancel score if I don't feel like its a big enough improvement
Currently in the UMDNJ SMP
3.8 GPA
Have taken two medical classes and have done well in both
Shadowing:
1) Orthopaedic Surgeon: 2013- current
2) Endocrinologist: Summer of 2009 and the beginning of 2013- more than 60 hours
3) Emergency physician: Summer of 2011- more than 100 hours
4) Another Emergency physician: Summer of 2010- more than 100 hours
-both were part of a special program at the hospital
5) 2006-2008 rotated through different departments at a hospital because of a special program at my high school
Research:
1) Major research experience at undergraduate physics department for one year
2) Neuroscience research during three summers at a college near home. One year was funded by my own grant
3) Possibly starting a new research experience at UMDNJ for masters soon
Employment:
1) Tutor at undergraduate college for a year
2) Editor for undergraduate newspaper for last two years
3) Staff writer for the newspaper for first two years
4) EMT at home for three years
Other:
1) Habitat for humanity for five years
References:
1) Four great recommendations from undergraduate professors- 2 science, 2 non-science
2) Two recommendations from masters professors
3) One from endocrinologist
So what's the prognosis? I haven't narrowed down my school choices (not that there's much to narrow since my stats are...) yet because of the MCAT coming up. My first and foremost choice though is UMDNJ, and I'm a NJ resident. I want to apply early decision there, but will see what the Dean says. Otherwise I will be applying broadly to both MD and DO programs.
Thanks for any advice on school choices or general plans of action!!
