I have a 32Q (11v, 10p, 11b) MCAT and 3.8 cGPA with about equal science and non-science grades. I majored in neurobiology with a minor in bioethics and humanities. I'm looking at picking a list of schools with a good shot of getting most of them. I am a Washington state resident but am living in Washington DC now since I'm doing Teach for America there.
Here are my EC's.
-2 years of internship in our athletic training room, including one year of volunteering with four different primary care doctors in there. 8hrs/week. Around 150 hrs of Shadowing doctors total. All volunteer.
-4 years of club soccer, captain for one.
-About 60 hours of volunteering at a hospital as an escort..
-1 month spent doing medical volunteering in Africa (I had so much fun with this, if you can find the money I highly recommend it.)
-1 year of surgical clinical outcomes research (for credit). 9hrs/week.
-2years tutoring in an engineering study center. 5 hrs/week. (paid)
-1 year Neurobiology club events officer (I just organize parties...)
-2 spring breaks spent in rural areas shadowing physicians of various specialties. (hopefully I will do this one more time leading and organizing a team of ~4 pre-meds.) This should add to about 80 more hours of shadowing physicians. Also led a team of students the second spring break so theres some leadership.
-College course mentoring disadvantaged high school students and helping them apply to college. 2credits/quarter for one year.
-Won a little bioethics debate with a team for a little money
-My biggest and current activity is I am doing Teach for America (TFA), teaching 8th grade science in Washington DC. Toughest thing I have ever done by far. I am just finishing my first of two years.
-My LORs should be alright, nothing mind blowing but solid. 2 science profs from my neurobio major, 1 prof from bioethics minor, 1 from sports med internship advisor who is an athletic trainer, one from TFA leadreship mentor.
My list of schools
University Of Washington (my only in-state school)
Oregon Health and Science University
George Washington University
Georgetown University
Boston University
Tufts University
Brown
Stanford
University of Miami
University of Vermont
Tulane
Wake Forest
Rosalind Franklin
Rush Medical College
NYMC
Temple
Jefferson
Drexel
Univ. of Maryland
UC Denver
UCSF
USC
Advice on my chances at these schools? Recommendations for other schools? Recommendations to remove any? Should I add more or remove some? I'm hoping TFA in DC will help me get into at least the DC schools and maybe help with Maryland since I actually do TFA in Maryland near to DC. My personal statement emphasizes serving the underserved with TFA, shadowing physicians in rural areas, going to Africa, etc.
I am still probably going to remove one of the philly schools, and am not sure on U of Maryland, UC Denver, UCSF, and USC.
My top choices are University of Washington, one of the Boston schools, one of the DC schools, or Brown. (And Stanford though its unlikely I will get in). My MCAT score expires after this cycle since I wasn't planning on taking 2 years off inbetween undergrad and med school. I need to get in this year!
