Hey! This is my first post! I am getting close to application to Osteopathic schools and just would like some input on my chances of acceptance. I have my sights on PCOM-Ga campus, so if anyone has specific advice regarding this school, that would be more than awesome!
I am double majoring in Biomedical Science and Psychology at Auburn University (with hopes of becoming a Psychiatrist.)
My Cumulative GPA is a 3.43, Science GPA of 3.34, and Non-science GPA of 3.57.
I stupidly took the MCAT cold the first time and got a 20. This was with absolutely ZERO preparation... (I know what you are thinking, but it is what it is.) This semester I took Kaplan's on-site class that has been a three month class 6 hours a week. I am scheduled to retake the MCAT on May 23rd. I have been getting upper 20s and low 30s on the practice tests. Of course, I would love to get in the 30s, however, being realistic, I am assuming my score to end up somewhere around a 26-27.
I have EXTENSIVE EC activities in both majors and am a part of honor societies holding leadership positions throughout many. I have found most of my passion to be in volunteer work so I would definitely say this is my strong point. I volunteered two years at a pre-school specifically trained in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I worked over ten hours a week. I have also volunteered a good amount at the local nursing home. I recently went on a mission trip to Nicaragua. My sophomore year I was also a part of an Opera program. I have good shadowing experience with a variety of doctors, one being a D.O who wrote one of my recommendations. I have done research in both of my majors; specifically Microbiology and Clinical Psychology working with children with ADHD.
I will be graduating in December (4.5 years of undergraduate,) and during the spring I will be teaching English in Nicaragua for 3 months, HOPEFULLY before attending D.O school the Fall 2014.
Here are the black marks on my GPA: I have 2 Ws one in vertebrate development and one in history 1. I failed Organic Chemistry 2 the first time I took it due to begin absent from class for two weeks with mono (ohh the joys of life!) I decided not to take a medical leave for the semester because I was able to compensate in my other classes making As and Bs. I know with the grade substitution on ACCOMAS, I can use the most recent grade if the class was retaken. I re took the class and got an A.
THIS semester... due to some family issues I was required to get a job to support myself. I bartend due to the fact that it is fast, easy money and I am a very social person. I think this has really taught me some life lessons as well. I also took 18 hours with MCAT class, work and psychology research. OVERLOAD. Due to this I believe my grades are going to end up being a D in Biochem II (the final was worth 50% of the grade and I do not believe I did very well on it. A C in histology, two Bs and an A in my three other psychology classes... needless to say this is going to hurt my GPA, and my concern is, downward trend. I have already calculated these grades into my above GPA calculation as well as the grade substitution for Ochem II.
To say the least, I am just looking for someone to be completely honest with me on my chances of acceptance. Any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thank you!
