Hey all,
I'm reaching the end of my junior year and getting prepared to apply in June/July for allopathic schools.
Some stats:
Biophysics Major - Psychology Minor
In my school's honors program.
3.73 Overall GPA
3.79 BCPM GPA
Consistent GPA (Lowest grade is flat B)
30R MCAT
-11 PS
-9 VR
-10 BS
I wish I had a higher MCAT, but I'm afraid that if I retake it I might do the same or worse. Am I right in thinking this? My reasoning is that I should apply now (I'm not aiming for high schools) and hope for the best. If I have to take a year off, Ill study my ass off and do better. I know I can; I'm just busy now and think if I have a good chance of getting in somewhere, I shouldn't risk retaking and doing worse.
As for ECs, I'm afraid that I'm faring on the weak side.
-Studied abroad for 1 semester
-I'm a member of a few clubs on campus but no official positions.
-Eagle Scout
-Did 75 hours of volunteering at a hospital
-Shadowed 60 hours in OR/Hospital setting
-Starting up 2 school organizations that I will co-head next year
-Awarded a research fellowship last summer
-Continued doing organic chemistry research for a full year and will be paid over this summer
-Participated in undergraduate research symposiums
-Going to Honduras this summer on a Global Medical Brigade
-I also plan on volunteering over this summer in a health clinic
So yeah, I'm afraid I'm really digging for ECs. Advice?
Lastly, I'm in-state in Kansas. We only have one medical school, yet according to MSAR, the average matriculant was 29P and 3.72 GPA 3.69 BCPM. They interview ~80% of their in-state applicants and the number of matriculants was half of those interviewed. I would be plenty happy going to Kansas.
Where else should I apply (I know broadly)?
Sorry last question: Does it benefit me at all if my mother or father is an MD employed by the school's hospital? - I feel bad if the answer is yes, but I'm really more curious than anything. I hadn't thought of it until a friend mentioned it to me.
Thanks a ton. Sorry this was so long!
