Hey guys
So I ran off to college when I was 18 ready to become a doctor. After my first semester I was overwhelmed, felt that it was hopeless and that I would never achieve my dream. I gave up but was too scared to go home because of family problems so I stayed in school but didn't make any attempt at classes. After two semesters of not attending class I was kicked out for academic reasons. I was an idiot and I think back on it now and shiver.
Since then I have done as much as I can to rectify the situation:
2 years at community college taking some pre-med reqs and some extracurrics - 4.0 GPA
2 years at SUNY Stony Brook with major in Neuroscience - 3.8 GPA, 3.9 sGPA
33O MCAT
5 months research
200 hours volunteer at hospital
EMT-B certified and have been riding for nearly 3 years in two separate volunteer ambulance corps.
A lot of work experience in medical field (i.e. medical billing, hospital administration)
Decent LORs from previous teachers and employers
Now, my issue is that my AMCAS gpa will be lowered significantly because of my time at my first college experience. I have about 5-6 flat-out failed classes under my belt from there. I'm not sure how low that will bring my gpa but I believe that it will be a lot.
I think that given the way schools screen out low gpa applicants, schools will be unlikely to see how much I have improved in the last few years.
Do I have a chance at U.S. schools? Is there anything I can do to help myself?
Thank you for your help
