I'm a California resident; URM as well. I'm mainly concerned with my junior gpa, I will be receiving a 3.33gpa here at a UC. I just transferred from a community college so that's what looks bad. But overall, I have a 3.63c, 3.48s, and a 30 on the mcat.
I have a good story as to why I'm interested in medicine, it also has to deal with my father passing away. I'm reluctant to include this in my personal essay because I don't want adcoms to focus too much on that.
I have fairly decent EC's:
-worked as an Admissions clerk at local hospital(20-30hrs/wk)
-worked as pharm tech at local hospital(20-30hrs/wk)
-shadowed my local family practice MD(~60 hrs).
-Marching Band and Drumline coach for my high school and middle school(over 200hrs)
-activities leader for an after school elementary program
-assist elementary teacher with activities in class
-worked as a billing clerk at a neurosurgeon's office.(20hr/wk)
-and the typical hospital volunteering(~150hrs)
I want to know around what level of schools should I apply to? Should I focus more on MD or DO schools? Should I, or am I required to shadow a DO physician if I want to apply to DO schools? And do I even have a shot at getting in?
I here a lot of rumors that adcoms don't like seeing your gpa drop after transferring to a university, but unfortunately, that has happened. Perhaps it's okay since I transferred to a top 10 public university? Thanks!
