Let me first say that I'm a junior Integrative Physiology major, and my GPA is 3.84 (After this semester it should be above 3.9). Clearly I can handle pre-med coursework. However, last semester I failed Organic Chemistry 1, but I changed it to Pass/Fail so it didn't affect my GPA (just shows up as U on my transcript). This semester I am on track to get an A+ in the class. I failed it last semester because I was going through some really rough personal issues, and while I should have tried to get a University-sanctioned drop because of mental health issues, I have too much pride for that, and it's too late to do it at this point.
Have I ruined my chances of being accepted into a top medical school? Or any medical school, for that matter? I mean, when I get an A+ on my transcript for Orgo this semester, I'm hoping the admission boards will see that I've a firm grasp of the material, and last semester must have been a fluke.
I am an Ambassador for my university, I'm a member of the Student Conduct Board, I volunteer 8 hours a week at a local hospital, I have over 150 shadowing hours with my uncle who is a trauma surgeon, and I'm going to begin a research internship this Summer. I'm also a member of the Pre-Health Club, but I never go to any of the meetings or anything because I can't be bothered... I just know it looks good on an application.
So I'm hoping that my promising GPA and high level of involvement will make my fluke last semester a non-issue. Is this the case?
Thanks for your time and your advice. I appreciate it.
